Chapter 6 - Strip the Stolen Wool

"Don't tell her to shut up," General Vance said, taking a slow step toward Daniel. The General stood four inches taller, his chest broad enough to block out the overhead fluorescent light. "In fact, I want her to speak. I want to know where she got that coat."

Rachel shrank back, her lower lip trembling. "I... Daniel bought it for me at a boutique in Soho..."

"That coat," the General said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, quiet rumble, "was hand-tailored in London in 1968 for my late wife, Evelyn Vance, before we deployed to West Berlin. My granddaughter Audrey wore it on her wedding day. The monogram inside the lapel stands for *Audrey Vance*."

The General’s eyes bored into Rachel. "Take it off."

"I... I'm pregnant!" Rachel cried, tears of humiliation finally spilling down her powdered cheeks. "You can't treat me like this! I'm cold!"

"MP," General Vance barked.

The female Military Police officer stepped forward immediately, gloved hands raised. "Ma'am, remove the unauthorized personal property immediately, or I will assist you."

Weeping loudly, Rachel scrambled to unbutton the coat, nearly tripping over her designer heels as she ripped her arms through the sleeves. She thrust the heavy cashmere fabric toward the MP, who carefully folded it and handed it directly back to me.

I held the coat against my chest. It smelled faintly of Rachel’s cheap floral perfume, but beneath it was the familiar, comforting cedar scent of my childhood home.

"Now," General Vance said, turning his attention back to Daniel. "I believe you mentioned something about divorce papers?"

Daniel was sweating profusely. A thick droplet rolled down his temple and splashed onto his silk tie. "General Vance... sir... it was a rough draft. Just legal posturing. Audrey and I have had marital problems, but we can work it out! We're a family! Those are my children in those incubators!"

"Ten minutes ago," Clara the nurse interjected, her voice shaking with righteous fury, "you called them little runts. You told Mrs. Vance that she and the babies were on their own."

General Vance’s jaw clenched so hard the muscles in his cheeks twitched.

May you like

"Did you now?" the General whispered.
