Chapter 10 - The Rebuilt Home

Four months passed.
The spring flowers were in full bloom, painting the grounds of the Moretti estate in vibrant shades of lilac, white, and gold. The horrors of the winter were fading into memory. Vanessa Bellini and her remaining co-conspirators were serving life sentences in maximum security under charges that ensured they would never see the light of day.
The little house on Maple Street had been completely restored, transformed into a peaceful summer retreat surrounded by newly planted white roses.
Today, however, the Moretti estate was filled with laughter and the sound of champagne flutes clinking.
Emily stood on the stone terrace, wearing a flowing white sundress that hugged her eight-month baby bump. Her skin glowed with health and happiness. Around her, trusted friends, distant cousins, and even the hardened veteran Marco were gathered for her baby shower.
A massive mountain of beautifully wrapped baby gifts covered the long banquet table.
Luca walked out onto the terrace carrying a silver tray with two glasses of sparkling apple cider. He looked ten years younger, having traded his rigid charcoal mafia suits for a relaxed cream linen shirt and tailored slacks.
"To the future of the Moretti family," Luca smiled, handing Emily her glass.
"To family," Emily echoed, clinking her glass against his. "I never imagined I could feel this safe again."
"You earned this peace, sweetheart," Luca said, watching her lovingly. "In three weeks, this house will be filled with the sound of a baby crying. I've already hired the best pediatric team on the East Coast."
Emily laughed softly, resting her hand on her belly as the baby kicked gently against her palm. "You're going to spoil him rotten, aren't you?"
May you like
"That is my absolute right as a grandfather," Luca said with a proud grin. "Every Moretti child deserves the world."
The afternoon faded into a peaceful twilight, the guests gradually saying their warm goodbyes. For the first time in her adult life, Emily went to sleep that night feeling whole, protected by the father she had once thought abandoned her.
