Chapter 11 - The Knock in the Storm

A month later, a torrential late-summer thunderstorm rolled over the coastline, drowning the city in sheets of relentless rain and booming thunder.
Emily tossed and turned in the quiet nursery, resting on the plush rocker chair. Her due date was less than a week away, and the heavy atmosphere made her restless. Outside, lightning fractured the black sky, casting jagged, spider-web shadows across the sage-green walls.
Downstairs, Luca was in his private study reviewing the final legal trusts establishing the baby's multi-million dollar inheritance.
Suddenly, with a deafening crack of thunder, the lights in the mansion flickered once, twice, and died.
The emergency generators instantly engaged, but only bathed the hallways in a dim, eerie red glow.
Then, the high-security perimeter alarms shrieked—a piercing, frantic alert that signified a total breach of the estate’s outer compound.
Inside the study, Luca sprang to his feet, pulling a concealed 9mm pistol from beneath his mahogany desk. He grabbed his radio. "Marco! Status report!"
Static crackled back, followed by a frantic, choked gasp. *"Boss... it’s not the Bellinis... they’re using military-grade frequency jammers... our grid is totally down—"*
A sudden burst of silenced gunfire cut the transmission dead.
In the nursery upstairs, Emily gasped as a sharp contraction seized her abdomen. She gripped the armrests of the rocking chair, groaning in sudden pain as she realized her water had broken. "Dad!" she cried out.
At that exact second, an encrypted burner phone—hidden inside a locked compartment of Elena’s antique jewelry box on the dresser—began to ring.
Emily had never seen that phone before.
Trembling through the pain of labor, she reached out and pressed the glowing screen.
An unfamiliar, distorted mechanical voice whispered through the speaker:

*"Tell Luca his debt is finally due. The child she carries belongs to the Morozov bloodline. Open the front door, or we burn the nursery to the ground."*
Downstairs, the heavy oak doors of the mansion were blown completely off their hinges with a thunderous explosion.
