Chapter 2 - The Unraveling

Vanessa’s lips parted, but no sound came out. The private dining room of the Grand Continental was suddenly as cold as a tomb. Around them, the crystal chandelier hummed under the subtle vibration of the city below, its light catching the sheen of sweat forming along Vanessa’s hairline.

"I asked you a question, Vanessa," Luca said. His voice was not loud. Luca never shouted when he was genuinely dangerous. It was a low, velvet rasp that carried the weight of twenty years running the city's most ruthless syndicate.

"Luca, please... you're listening to a confused girl," Vanessa stammered, raising her manicured hands in a desperate plea. "Emily hasn't been herself since she found out about the pregnancy. She’s overwhelmed. You know how sentimental she gets about her mother’s things. I was only trying to take the burden off her shoulders so she wouldn't stress the baby!"

"By telling her I was ashamed of her?" Luca leaned forward, placing both palms flat on the white linen tablecloth. "By forging an eviction notice and sending two low-level muscle boys to terrorize a pregnant woman in broad daylight?"

Emily looked at her father, her breath catching in her throat. For months, Vanessa had fed her poison. She had whispered in Emily's ear that Luca looked at her growing belly with disgust, that an unwed pregnancy would ruin the Moretti family reputation, that Luca wanted her out of the city before the high-society wedding. Emily had believed it because her father had always been a distant, terrifying figure wrapped in black suits and whispered rumors.

Now, seeing the veins bulging along Luca’s temple, she realized how completely she had been played.

"Marco," Luca said, without taking his eyes off his fiancée.

From the shadowed corner of the room, Luca’s head of security stepped forward. Marco was a bear of a man with scar tissue over his left brow, loyal only to the Moretti bloodline. "Boss."

"Take Miss Bellini’s purse, her phone, and her car keys. Escort her to the guest suite at the compound. She stays there under round-the-clock guard. No phone calls. No visitors. If she tries to take two steps past the front door, break her ankles."

"Luca, no! You can’t do this to me!" Vanessa shrieked as Marco efficiently snatched her designer handbag off the velvet chair. Two more armed guards materialized from the hallway, flanking her immediately. "My father sits on the Syndicate Council! You can't treat me like a common criminal!"

"Your father can come collect what's left of you once I find out what was in my late wife's cabinet," Luca said, his tone utterly devoid of humanity. "Get her out of my sight."

Vanessa was dragged from the dining room, her frantic screams muffled as the heavy mahogany doors clicked shut behind her.

Silence fell over the room once more.

Luca turned to Emily. The cold, murderous mask melted instantly, replaced by a deep, weary ache in his dark eyes. He reached across the table, his rough, calloused hand hesitating before gently covering hers.

"You've been carrying this alone," Luca murmured, his voice cracking slightly. "Why didn't you come straight to me, Emily?"

May you like

"She told me you hated what I had become," Emily whispered, tears finally escaping and running down her cheeks. "She said you were building a new life with her, and my baby was a reminder of a past you wanted buried."

Luca let out a sharp, bitter exhale, shaking his head. "Stand up, sweetheart. We're going home. There's something you need to see."
