Chapter 9 - A Father's Vow

The sunrise crept over the city in streaks of rose and gold. At the Moretti estate, the chaos of the night was finally replaced by an eerie, healing stillness.
Emily sat propped up in a lavish four-poster bed in the master suite. A private obstetrician, flanked by two nurses, finished packing away their portable ultrasound equipment.
Luca stood by the tall French balcony doors, waiting anxiously.
"Doctor?" Luca asked, his voice tighter than it had been when facing the armed council bosses.
"Both mother and baby are in perfect health, Don Moretti," the doctor smiled warmly. "Her vitals are stabilized. The baby has a strong heartbeat. All she needs now is rest and absolute peace of mind."
Luca let out a long, shuddering breath, nodding respectfully to the medical team as they quietly exited the room.
He walked over and sat on the edge of the bed. For a long moment, the feared underworld king simply looked at his daughter, his eyes rimmed with unshed tears.
"I spent twenty years thinking I was protecting you by keeping you away from my world," Luca said softly. "I thought if I gave you distance, you wouldn't be stained by the violence. Instead, I left you vulnerable to the wolves inside my own gates."
"You came for me, Dad," Emily said, taking his hand. "When it mattered most, you chose me. You chose my baby."
Luca reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet jeweler's box. He opened it, revealing Elena’s vintage diamond pendant—a piece Vanessa had claimed was lost years ago.
"I found this in Vanessa’s private safe," Luca whispered, carefully fastening the delicate gold chain around Emily’s neck. The diamond caught the morning sun, resting warmly against Emily’s chest. "Your mother wanted you to wear this when you became a mother yourself."
Emily touched the diamond, feeling the warmth of her mother's presence for the first time in years. "What will you do now, Dad?"

Luca looked toward the open nursery doors just across the hall, where the morning light illuminated the empty baby crib.
"I’m stepping down from active leadership," Luca announced quietly. "Falcone and the Council will run the business operations. My only job from today forward is being a grandfather. I will guard that nursery door with my life."
