Chapter 5 - Elena's Legacy

"What is it, Dad?" Emily stepped closer, her heart hammering against her ribs.

Luca didn't answer right away. His knuckles turned white against the binder's leather cover. He flipped page after page, revealing meticulously documented wire transfers, offshore banking routing numbers, and transcripts of intercepted telephone conversations dating back nearly seven years.

"Elena didn't die of a natural cancer relapse," Luca said, his voice dropping into an octave of rage so terrifying that even Marco took half a step back.

Emily froze. "What are you talking about? Mom was sick for months—"

"Look at this," Luca said, turning the binder toward her. "Your mother was a biochemist before she married me. She kept detailed logs of the experimental treatments she was receiving at the Bellini-funded research hospital."

Emily’s eyes scanned the handwritten notes. Elena’s precise handwriting chronicled every dose, every symptom, and the sudden, suspicious introduction of synthetic compounds that systematically destroyed her liver function over a four-month period.

Pinned to the back of the ledger was a signed laboratory analysis by an independent toxicologist, along with a voice memo transcript:

*‘Luca, if you are reading this, it means my fears came true. Antonio Bellini and his daughter Vanessa have been quietly laundering syndicate capital through shell pharmaceutical firms. When I discovered the discrepancy, Antonio realized I would tell you. They aren't trying to join our family through marriage, Luca. They have been dismantling us from the inside out for a decade. Protect our daughter. Do not trust the Bellinis.’*

Emily fell against the basement wall, hot tears burning her eyes. "Vanessa... Vanessa’s family murdered my mother?"

"They poisoned her," Luca whispered, his chest heaving as if the air had turned to poison. "They made it look like a tragic complication of her lymphoma. And then Vanessa spent five patient years working her way into my circle, pretending to comfort me, pretending to love the memory of Elena."

"And the wedding," Emily realized, horror choking her voice. "The marriage contract was supposed to merge your syndicates completely."

"She wasn't trying to become my wife," Luca said, closing the binder with a sickening snap. "She was positioning herself to inherit everything after I suffered a similar 'tragic accident.' And you—and my unborn grandchild—were the only legal heirs who stood in her way."

Luca turned toward Marco. "Lock the house down. Emily stays here under a full twelve-man perimeter guard until I return."

"Where are you going, Dad?" Emily grabbed his forearm, desperate.

Luca looked down at his daughter. For the first time, she saw the true legend of the Moretti underworld—a man who had ruled through ruthless intelligence and unyielding loyalty.

"I am going to have a very long conversation with my fiancée," Luca said softly. "And then I am going to erase the Bellini name from this earth."
