Chapter 7 - The Live Broadcast

The following evening, the flagship studios of Vale Broadcast Group in Seattle were in a state of high alert.
Grant Vale had been backed into a corner. When Madison’s smear video exploded across the internet, public pressure had reached a boiling point. Sensing a ratings goldmine—and a desperate chance to salvage his network’s plummeting stock—Grant had authorized a live, nationally televised special edition of *The National Ledger*, the network’s flagship prime-time news program.
Madison sat in the studio makeup chair, wearing an understated soft-pink blouse designed to make her look fragile, remorseful, and completely innocent. Her publicist hovered nearby, coaching her on when to dab her eyes with a tissue.
"Remember," Greg whispered. "Soft voice. Tremble slightly when you mention Claire’s name. You’re not the aggressor; you’re the naive socialite caught in a corporate trap."
"I know how to act, Greg," Madison snapped, checking her reflection in the mirror with cold satisfaction. "Tonight, Claire Everhart becomes the most hated woman in America."
Across the studio floor, the host, veteran journalist Marcus Thorne, adjusted his earpiece. The red tally lights on the studio cameras glowed.
"Five... four... three..." the floor manager signaled.
"Good evening," Marcus Thorne began, looking straight into the camera. "Tonight, the corporate scandal that has gripped the nation takes a dramatic personal turn. Following the stunning federal indictment of Everhart Vector CEO Lucas Everhart, accusations have emerged that the confrontation at the Cascade Crown Gala was not a random altercation, but a calculated takedown orchestrated by the elusive wife of billionaire Nathaniel Everhart. Joining us live in the studio is Madison Vale."
The camera shifted to Madison. She offered a fragile, trembling smile. "Thank you for having me, Marcus."
"Madison, you released a video yesterday that has garnered over fifteen million views. You claim you were targeted. Explain what happened beneath that chandelier."
Madison drew a shaky breath, dabbing her eye with a tissue. "Marcus... I was terrified. That woman approached me wearing a server uniform. She cornered me. She whispered horrific things about my family, told me she was going to destroy Lucas, and when she lunged at me, I panicked. The fabric caught on my ring as I tried to push her away. I never wanted to hurt anyone. I was a victim of an orchestrated corporate ambush."
Marcus leaned forward. "Those are grave allegations, Madison. But before we continue, we have a breaking development."
Madison blinked, a flicker of unease passing through her eyes. "What development?"
"Earlier this afternoon," Marcus said, looking at his monitor, "our producers were contacted directly by Everhart Global. And agreeing to appear live on our broadcast tonight... is Claire Everhart herself."
Madison’s stomach dropped. "Wait—what?! That wasn't agreed to!"
The studio doors slid open.
Claire walked onto the set.
She wore a breathtaking, midnight-blue tailored dress that fell with sharp, elegant precision. Her posture was aristocratic, her expression cool and serene. Nathaniel Everhart walked three steps behind her, radiating an aura of absolute command that caused the camera operators to freeze.
Claire walked directly to the interview desk and sat in the guest chair opposite Madison. Nathaniel remained standing just outside the camera arc, his arms folded, his dark eyes locked on Madison like a hawk watching prey.
Marcus Thorne looked electrified. "Mrs. Everhart... welcome. You’ve heard Miss Vale’s testimony."
"I have," Claire said smoothly, her clear, beautiful voice filling the studio. "It was quite theatrical."
Madison leaned forward, her voice hardening despite her coached innocence. "Theatrical?! You attacked me! You provoked me!"
"Did I, Madison?" Claire tilted her head, a small, knowing smile playing on her lips. "Marcus, with your permission, I would like to broadcast the unedited, certified digital surveillance footage recorded from the Cascade Crown Hotel’s 4K ceiling array. Along with the synchronized audio captured by the lapel microphone I was wearing as part of our federal compliance investigation."
Madison’s face turned the color of ash. "No! Marcus, this is an ambush!"
"Roll the footage," Marcus commanded into his earpiece.
On the massive monitor behind the desk, the scene played out before twenty million viewers.
The video was crystal clear. It showed Madison sneering, deliberately stepping directly into Claire’s path, and ripping the silk from her shoulder with vicious, unmistakable malice.
Then came the audio, booming through the studio speakers:
*“There... Maybe now you’ll remember your place... Now you look like what you are... Lucas, have this garbage thrown into the alley!”*
Then came Claire’s calm, unyielding response:
*“You have made a very serious mistake.”*
The video froze on Madison’s triumphant, cruel grin.
The silence in the television studio was suffocating.
Claire turned her grey eyes toward Madison, whose mouth was hanging open in paralyzed horror.
"You tore my dress, Madison, because you believed that a person who serves champagne does not have the right to dignity," Claire said, her voice cutting through the broadcast with undeniable moral authority. "You tore it because you believed your father’s wealth gave you the license to humiliate anyone you deemed beneath you. But what you failed to realize is that character is not determined by the price of your gown. It is revealed by how you treat those who cannot fight back."
Madison tried to speak, but only a strangled squeak emerged from her throat.
Claire turned back to Marcus Thorne. "Furthermore, as of four o'clock today, Vale Broadcast Group’s board of directors has accepted the immediate resignation of Grant Vale, following our disclosure of eight million dollars in illicit transfers routed through his personal development accounts. The board has also initiated legal proceedings to strip Madison Vale of all trust disbursements."
Marcus stared at his tablet as his producer frantically screamed confirmations into his ear. "I... I am receiving confirmation of that breaking news right now."
Madison looked around the studio in sheer terror. She looked at the cameras, at the floor crew staring at her with utter contempt, and finally at Nathaniel, who stood in the shadows with an expression of cold, merciless finality.
May you like
Madison burst into genuine, ugly sobs, buried her face in her hands, and fled the set, her heels clattering hysterically against the studio floor as the broadcast cut to a stunned commercial break.
