Chapter 4 - The Scramble of the Desperate

Across town, in a sprawling, glass-walled modern mansion perched in the hills of Mercer Island, silence did not exist.

Glass shattered against the imported quartz kitchen island.

"Are you telling me we’re bankrupt?!" Madison shrieked, hurling a highball glass across the room. It exploded into glittering shards against the designer cabinetry. "Are you telling me that miserable, penniless little bitch actually owns the trust?!"

Lucas Everhart sat at the dining table, his tuxedo jacket discarded on the floor, his bow tie undone, his hair disheveled. He held his head in his hands, staring at the glowing screen of his laptop.

Every single notification on his screen was an execution order.

*Everhart Global: Term Sheet Series D Revoked.*

*Silicon Valley Horizon Bank: Emergency Margin Call Issued.*

*Federal Bureau of Investigation: Formal Notice of Preservation of Digital Assets.*

"Shut up, Madison," Lucas groaned, his voice cracking with exhaustion and sheer terror. "Just shut the hell up for five seconds."

"Don't tell me to shut up!" she screamed, storming toward him, her diamond jewelry rattling against her wrists. "You told me you were the heir! You told me that Nathaniel was just an administrative figurehead who managed old money! You told me that Everhart Vector was going to go public at a twelve-billion-dollar valuation by Christmas!"

"It was!" Lucas shouted, slamming both palms down onto the table as he stood up, his face red and veins bulging in his neck. "It was going to! Until you couldn't control your disgusting ego for two hours at a children’s charity dinner! Do you have any idea what you did?!"

"What *I* did?!" Madison’s voice rose to a glass-shattering pitch. "She was disrespecting me! She was a nobody!"

"She is Claire Bennett!" Lucas roared, his voice shaking the open-concept room. "She graduated top of her class from Yale Law, took a master’s in forensic accounting from Wharton, and personally drafted the corporate charter that protects Nathaniel’s seventy-billion-dollar portfolio! Nathaniel doesn't make a single acquisition without her signature! And you ripped her dress off in front of four hundred donors and called her trash!"

Madison froze. Her chest heaved, her face fluctuating between disbelief and the icy realization of what she had challenged. "Then... then why was she hiding? Why didn't anyone know they were married?"

"Because Nathaniel didn't want the media circus around her!" Lucas cried, dropping back into his chair and burying his face in his hands. "He wanted her protected from our family’s enemies! And she was running an internal audit on Harbor Light because she suspected I was moving cash from the charity into our cash-burn accounts to keep Vector afloat!"

Before Madison could respond, her phone began vibrating aggressively against the marble counter.

The caller ID displayed a single name: *DAD.*

Madison scrambled for the phone, pressing it to her ear with trembling fingers. "Dad? Dad, thank God. You need to call Nathaniel Everhart right now. He’s threatening—"

"Madison, what did you do?" Grant Vale’s voice did not carry its usual booming patriarch authority. It was tight, strained, and laced with pure panic.

"Dad, it was an accident—"

"Turn on the news," Grant commanded coldly. "Turn it on right now."

Madison grabbed the remote control and flicked on the eighty-five-inch television above the fireplace.

The screen immediately cut to a special financial news bulletin. The anchor’s voice was crisp and clinical:

*“Breaking news tonight out of Seattle. Reports are confirming that the Department of Justice, in coordination with the Securities and Exchange Commission, has launched an immediate inquiry into Everhart Vector following allegations of systemic misappropriation of charitable funds from the Harbor Light Foundation. Sources close to the board confirm that Everhart Global Chairman Nathaniel Everhart has formally severed all corporate ties with the tech firm, alongside an announcement that his wife, Claire Everhart, has assumed direct executive control over the liquidation proceedings.”*

Below the banner, a crystal-clear high-definition still photograph from the gala appeared. It showed Madison sneering, holding the ripped strip of green silk, while Claire stood with absolute regal composure.

"Dad," Madison gasped, tears of real horror finally welling in her eyes. "Dad, kill the story! Your network owns the broadcast rights!"

"I can't kill it, you idiot!" Grant Vale shouted through the phone. "Nathaniel Everhart’s attorneys just served us with a seven-hundred-million-dollar defamation warning, and our cloud servers are experiencing an intentional, legally sanctioned throttle! If I pull that broadcast, my own advertisers will sue me into non-existence by Monday! Who told you to touch that woman?!"

"I... I didn't know—"

"Pack your bags and get out of that house," Grant ordered harshly. "I am releasing a formal statement tonight severing our family trust from Everhart Vector. Do not come to my office. Do not post on your social accounts. If you drag my media network into your petty high-school drama, Madison, I swear to God I will cut you out of the will before morning."

The line went dead.

Madison stared at the phone as the screen went black. Her hands were shaking so violently she dropped the device onto the rug.

Across the table, Lucas’s computer chimed with an incoming email.

He clicked the notification with a numb finger. It was a formal summons from the Everhart Global Board of Directors.

*Emergency Session: 08:00 AM. Attendance Mandatory. Non-compliance will result in immediate forfeiture of all corporate indemnification.*

Lucas looked up at Madison. His eyes were completely hollow.

"It’s over," he whispered. "We’re dead."
