Chapter 6 - Madison's Desperate Gamble

By late afternoon, the news of Lucas Everhart’s arrest had detonated across global financial media.
Every major news outlet carried the headline: *Tech Prodigy Lucas Everhart Indicted on Massive Wire Fraud Charges.* But while the corporate world was dissecting the fall of Everhart Vector, social media was fixated on something far more sensational.
In a penthouse suite in downtown Seattle, Madison Vale sat on a white leather sofa, her face smeared with mascara, surrounded by empty wine glasses and three high-priced public relations consultants she had hired with her personal credit card.
"We have to change the narrative right now," Madison hissed, clutching an ice pack to her temple. "My father is completely useless! He blocked my number! Every single brand I represent—Gucci, Sephora, Nordstrom—they’ve all dropped me in the last six hours!"
The lead consultant, a slick man in his forties named Greg, rubbed his chin nervously. "Madison, the evidence is overwhelming. Lucas was caught red-handed. The public knows you were living on the embezzled funds."
"I didn't know where the money came from!" she shrieked, jumping to her feet. "I am an innocent bystander! I was Lucas’s partner, not his accountant! And that woman... that Claire Bennett... she provoked me! She baited me in front of hundreds of people!"
Greg hesitated. "There’s video, Madison. The footage clearly shows you tearing her dress off."
"Then cut the video!" Madison snarled, her eyes wild with desperation. "Edit it! Frame it as a confrontation! She approached me, whispered threats in my ear, and tried to attack me! I was defending myself! We release a twenty-minute video on my platform: *The Real Truth Behind the Everhart Gala.* We paint Claire as a gold-digging corporate operative who seduced Nathaniel Everhart, weaponized his power, and deliberately targeted me out of jealousy!"
"Madison, going to war with Nathaniel Everhart publicly is suicide," one of the junior publicists cautioned. "He has an army of attorneys—"
"What more can he take from me?!" Madison screamed, throwing the ice pack at the wall. "My reputation is already in the gutter! If I go down, I am dragging Claire down with me! The internet loves a scandal! They hate the ultra-wealthy, and they hate secret billionaire wives! We make this about class warfare! We make me the victim of an elite family feud!"
Within two hours, Madison’s team had coordinated with a fringe digital tabloid network known for aggressive, unverified celebrity smear campaigns.
At 6:00 PM, a heavily edited six-minute video was uploaded across Madison’s social channels, titled: *The Truth: How I Was Set Up by Nathaniel Everhart’s Secret Mistress.*
The video featured dramatic music, tearful close-ups of Madison claiming she had been bullied, verbally assaulted, and cornered by an undercover corporate spy. She claimed Claire had whispered vulgar threats about ruining her family before Madison instinctively reacted to protect herself.
The video went viral almost instantly.
Within thirty minutes, it had racked up two million views. Gossip blogs seized on the headline. Twitter hashtags began trending: *#ClaireEverhartExposed*, *#EverhartScandal*, *#JusticeForMadison*.
Inside the penthouse of the Cascade Crown Hotel, Nathaniel was standing on the terrace, watching the sunset over Puget Sound, when his chief of communications called.
Nathaniel listened for forty seconds, his expression darkening until his eyes resembled chips of obsidian.
"Understood. Send the file to Claire’s tablet," Nathaniel said, hanging up the phone.
He walked back into the living room, where Claire was sitting on the sectional sofa, reviewing a digital audit report.
"She did it," Nathaniel said quietly.
Claire looked up, raising an eyebrow. "She posted the smear?"
"Two million views in under an hour," Nathaniel said, sitting down beside her. "She’s claiming you attacked her, whispered threats, and orchestrated the entire gala confrontation as a personal vendetta."
Claire didn't look angry. Instead, a slow, dangerous smile curved her lips.
"She really is unimaginative, isn't she?" Claire murmured, tapping her tablet to pull up the video. She watched thirty seconds of Madison weeping dramatically into the camera before closing it. "She thinks social media algorithms are a substitute for reality."
"I can have the platforms de-index her accounts within ten minutes," Nathaniel offered, his tone dark. "And I can have Grant Vale’s television licenses tied up in federal regulatory hearings by midnight."
"No," Claire said, placing a gentle hand on Nathaniel’s forearm. "If you censor her now, Nate, the public will think she struck a nerve. They will assume where there’s smoke, there’s fire."
"Then what do you want to do?"
Claire looked toward the wall of windows, her eyes gleaming with sharp intelligence.

"Madison wants a public spectacle," Claire said calmly. "So let’s give her one. On prime-time television. With an audience of twenty million people."
