Chapter 5 - Boardroom Reckoning

The executive boardroom on the sixtieth floor of the Everhart Tower overlooked the entire Seattle skyline, framed by the jagged, snow-capped peaks of Mount Rainier in the far distance.
At 7:55 AM, the long mahogany table was surrounded by twelve members of the executive committee—men and women who collectively managed private equity funds, logistics empires, and global real estate. The air in the room was thick with tension. Nobody touched the fresh coffee or the pastries laid out on the sideboards.
At exactly 7:58 AM, Lucas Everhart walked into the room.
He had tried his best to recover his composure. He wore an expensive dark navy suit, his hair had been slicked back, and he carried a leather briefcase. But the dark circles under his bloodshot eyes and the pale, clammy sheen on his skin gave him away.
He took his seat at the far end of the table, attempting a confident nod to two board members he considered allies. Neither of them met his gaze. Both looked down at their tablets in pointed silence.
At precisely 8:00 AM, the heavy double doors at the head of the boardroom swung open.
Every director rose to their feet immediately. Lucas hesitated, then scrambled up as well.
Nathaniel Everhart walked in first. He was dressed in a tailored three-piece charcoal suit, moving with absolute, lethal poise. But he did not sit in the chairman’s center seat.
Instead, he stepped aside, pulled the high-backed leather executive chair out, and waited.
Walking in behind him was Claire.
The gasps from the board were silent, but Lucas felt the air leave his lungs.
Claire looked nothing like the quiet server from the gala. She was dressed in an impeccable cream-colored bespoke pantsuit cut with razor-sharp lines. Her dark hair was swept up into an elegant, severe chignon. Her eyes, cool and commanding, scanned the twelve board members before settling squarely on Lucas.
She took the center seat. Nathaniel sat down directly to her right.
"Sit," Claire commanded.
The twelve directors sat down in unison, as if operated by a single mechanism. Lucas collapsed back into his chair, his hands gripping his knees under the table to hide their trembling.
Claire placed a slim silver tablet flat on the polished mahogany table and tapped the glass. Immediately, the twelve flat-panel screens embedded in front of each board member flashed to life.
"Good morning, gentlemen and ladies," Claire said, her voice crisp, calm, and perfectly modulated. "For those of you who have not formally met me, I am Claire Everhart. For the past three years, I have served as the Chief Risk and Compliance Counsel for Everhart Global’s private holdings."
She glanced at Lucas.
"Over the past forty-eight hours, our internal audit team finalized a seventy-page forensic brief detailing the systemic financial irregularities inside Everhart Vector. Specifically, the forty-two million dollars diverted from the Harbor Light Children’s Foundation over an eighteen-month period."
Lucas cleared his throat, leaning forward with an attempt at bravado. "Claire... Mrs. Everhart. With all due respect, those allocations were structured research-and-development advances. The board of Vector approved those transactions under standard inter-company liquidity protocols. We can present the documentation—"
"The documentation you forged?" Claire asked smoothly, not even raising her voice.
She swiped her tablet.
On every screen, an internal ledger appeared, side-by-side with bank routing confirmations.
"On March twelfth, six million dollars left the pediatric oncology research fund. Within forty-eight hours, three million was converted into bearer bonds through an offshore trust in Belize, and the remaining three million was wired directly to an escrow account in Monaco to purchase a 110-foot yacht registered under the name *The Madison V*."
Several board members winced.
"On August fourth," Claire continued, turning a page, "another eight million was drained under the guise of 'server infrastructure expansion.' Curiously, the recipient account was tied directly to a luxury real estate development in Palm Beach, registered to Grant Vale’s private development holding company."
Lucas felt the walls closing in. "That was... that was an investment vehicle! We were generating yield for the foundation!"
"You were stealing from dying children to buy yachts for your mistress and purchase media protection from her father," Nathaniel’s voice cut across the table, low, vibrating with an intensity that made the older directors flinch. "Do not insult my wife’s intelligence, Lucas. And never insult mine."
Nathaniel leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table. "Under the bylaws of Everhart Global, Section 14, any corporate officer engaged in willful criminal misappropriation forfeits all equity, severance, and indemnification immediately upon a unanimous vote of the executive board."
Nathaniel raised his right hand. "All in favor."
Without a second’s hesitation, every single hand around the table went up into the air.
Twelve to zero.
Lucas stared at the raised hands of the men who had shared cigars and golf courses with him just last week. "You can't do this... I founded Vector! It’s my code! It’s my company!"
"It was your company," Claire corrected coolly. "Until you leveraged eighty percent of its voting shares as collateral against the credit facilities extended to you by our trust. Which brings me to the second matter of business."
Claire turned her screen toward him.
"Everhart Vector is entering Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring as of 9:00 AM. The intellectual property, patents, and core server networks are being absorbed directly into Everhart Global’s healthcare division. All proceeds from the commercialization of your AI architecture will be placed into an irrevocable trust to permanently endow the Harbor Light Foundation."
"You took everything," Lucas whispered, his voice cracking, tears of impotent rage stinging his eyes. "You took everything I built."
"You built a house out of stolen money, Lucas," Claire said, closing her tablet with a soft, definitive click. "We simply returned the bricks to the people you took them from."
The double doors opened again. Two federal agents in dark suits stepped into the room, accompanied by the building’s head of security.
"Lucas Everhart?" the lead agent said, stepping forward with a warrant in hand. "I am Special Agent Miller, Federal Bureau of Investigation. You are under arrest for wire fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy."
Lucas looked at Nathaniel. "Nate... please. We’re blood. Grandfather would never—"
"Grandfather was a man of honor," Nathaniel said coldly, not blinking. "You are an embarrassment to our name."
May you like
As the agents hauled Lucas out of his chair and snapped handcuffs behind his back, Claire watched in total silence. Lucas didn't look at her again as he was dragged from the room, his muffled protests echoing down the marble hallway until the heavy doors clicked shut.
