Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Arrogant

The word hung in the chilled air of the Cascade Crown ballroom like a thunderclap that refused to dissipate.
*Wife.*
Madison’s breath hitched in her throat. She looked from Nathaniel Everhart’s towering frame down to the silent woman whose silk dress she had just shredded. "W-what?" Madison managed, a nervous, fluttering laugh escaping her lips. "Nathaniel... Mr. Everhart, you can’t be serious. She’s on the banquet staff. She’s a temp worker. She was harassing Lucas!"
Nathaniel did not even acknowledge Madison’s voice. Without breaking his stride, he slipped off his bespoke charcoal wool suit jacket. With movements that were infinitely gentle, entirely at odds with the murderous darkness in his eyes, he draped the heavy, warm fabric over Claire’s bare shoulders.
Claire did not pull away. She leaned slightly into his touch, her hand coming up to hold the lapels closed over her chest. The faint scent of cedarwood, bergamot, and rain that belonged entirely to Nathaniel enveloped her, steadying the adrenaline that had hummed beneath her skin.
"Did she hurt you?" Nathaniel asked quietly, his voice dropping into a register reserved only for her.
"No," Claire replied, her voice steady and clear. "She only ruined the dress you bought me in Milan."
Nathaniel’s fingers brushed against the crook of her neck, confirming she had no scratches. When his hand dropped back to his side, the warmth in his face vanished entirely. He turned around to face the ballroom.
The temperature in the room plummeted.
Lucas was already trembling. He stepped in front of Madison, his hands raised in a posture of desperate surrender. "Nate. Nate, listen to me. This was a misunderstanding. Madison didn't know. Nobody knew! You never announced a marriage. There was no press release, no announcement in the *Times*—"
"Do I require your permission, Lucas, to marry the woman I love?" Nathaniel’s voice was dangerously low, carrying an undertone that made several nearby executives instinctively take two steps backward.
"No! Of course not," Lucas stammered, sweat breaking out across his forehead, ruining his carefully curated image of tech-industry cool. "Of course not. But she was carrying a tray! She was dressed in hotel staff livery! Why would the wife of the chairman of Everhart Global be serving drinks at a charity gala?"
"Because," another voice rang out from the rear of the room, "Mrs. Everhart is the Chief Compliance Officer of the Everhart Family Foundation, and the newly appointed Chairwoman of the Harbor Light Children’s Trust."
The crowd parted again to reveal Arthur Vance, the sixty-year-old managing partner of Vance & Sterling, the most feared corporate litigation firm on the West Coast. Behind him walked two hotel security managers and the general manager of the Cascade Crown, whose face was the color of skim milk.
"Claire came here tonight," Nathaniel said, his gaze pinning Lucas to the floor, "because forty-two million dollars in charitable allocations intended for pediatric cancer research went missing over the last three quarters. Routed through three shell corporations registered in the Cayman Islands under the parent umbrella of Everhart Vector."
A collective gasp swept through the ballroom. Several prominent venture capitalists who had invested heavily in Lucas’s firm instantly traded horrified looks.
Madison, still clinging to her arrogance despite the ground crumbling under her feet, grabbed Lucas’s arm. "Lucas, stop letting them intimidate you! What does it matter who she is? She assaulted me first! My father is Grant Vale! We don't take orders from your cousin's secret bride! I will have the police here in ten minutes to file charges for public endangerment!"
Claire stepped forward from behind Nathaniel’s shoulder, the charcoal jacket billowing slightly around her frame. She looked at Madison not with anger, but with the cold, detached pity one might reserve for someone walking blindly into traffic.
"Call them, Madison," Claire said smoothly. "Please. Let the Seattle Police Department come. While they are taking your statement regarding my dress, they can also accept the formal criminal referral we submitted to the Department of Justice forty-five minutes ago."
Madison blinked, her lips parting. "What... what referral?"
"Wire fraud," Claire answered. "Securities manipulation. And money laundering. It appears your lifestyle—your penthouse in Belltown, your private jet leases, your summer villa in Lake Como—was not funded by your father’s generosity or your brand deals. It was funded directly by the Everhart Vector research grants that Lucas skimmed from Harbor Light."
Madison’s face drained of every drop of color. She snapped her head toward Lucas. "Lucas? What is she talking about? Lucas, tell her she’s lying!"
Lucas couldn't speak. He looked like a man standing before a firing squad. His jaw worked silently, his chest heaving under his tailored tuxedo. "Nate... we can fix this. It was a bridge loan. I was going to replace the capital after the Series D funding closed next week—"
"The Series D funding that was being underwritten by Everhart Global?" Nathaniel asked, his eyebrows raising slightly in mock surprise. "The term sheet I tore up in my car ten minutes ago?"
The silence that followed was deafening.
Nathaniel turned his attention to the trembling General Manager of the Cascade Crown. "Mr. Harrison."
"Y-yes, Mr. Everhart!" the manager squeaked, stumbling forward.
"The gala is concluded. Have the security detail clear the ballroom immediately. Close the service elevators, lock down the executive suites, and secure all digital surveillance footage from this room over the past four hours. If a single frame of data is missing, I will buy this hotel chain by sunrise solely to fire you and your entire board of directors."
"Understood, sir! Immediately!"
Nathaniel turned back to Claire, his demeanor shifting instantly back to pure devotion. He offered her his arm. "Let’s go upstairs, Claire. You shouldn't have to breathe the same air as these people any longer."
May you like
Claire took his arm without a word. Together, they walked through the center of the frozen crowd, leaving Madison Vale clutching her ripped silk in utter ruin, and Lucas Everhart staring at the total annihilation of his life.
