Chapter 5 - THE TANGLE OF DECEIT

The panic in our living room was palpable. My father looked as if he were about to faint, while Mark stared aimlessly at the ashes in the fireplace.

"Please..." my mother whispered, sinking onto the edge of the sofa, looking at me with wide, pleading eyes. "Nora, you can't do this to us. We’re your parents! We raised you! We paid for your clothes, your food, your school!"

"And you reminded me of the cost of every single slice of bread I ever ate," I said, leaning forward. "Do you remember my sixteenth birthday, Mom? You bought Chloe a designer dress, and you gave me a card that said, 'Try not to be such an expense this year.'"

My mother opened her mouth, but no words came out.

"Or what about when I was pregnant?" I continued, my voice cracking slightly with years of suppressed emotion. "I came to your house, terrified, seeking comfort. And what did you do? You called me a disgrace and told me to get out of your sight because I would ruin Chloe’s chances of marrying into high society."

Chloe stepped toward me, her eyes flashing with anger behind her sunglasses. "You set us up! You intentionally hid your marriage just to humiliate us!"

"I didn't set you up, Chloe," I answered calmly. "I simply lived my life. You humiliated yourselves by treating people with less money like trash. You assumed I was helpless. You assumed I had no power."

Adrian checked his watch. "You have three minutes to vacate my property before my security team physically removes you."

Mark stood up slowly, looking at my father with sudden, burning resentment. "This is your fault," Mark hissed at Richard. "You pushed her! You pushed Adrian Vance's wife into a fountain! You destroyed my company!"

"Your company was already failing, Mark!" my father shouted back, his face turning red. "You relied on my connections to get that wedding venue!"

"Your connections?!" Mark scoffed bitterly. "You're a small-time landlord drowning in debt! I married your daughter because I thought your family had real money! You're a fraud!"

Chloe gasped. "Mark! How can you say that?!"

"Shut up, Chloe!" Mark yelled, turning on his bride of less than twenty-four hours. "Our wedding cost $200,000, and your father couldn't even pay his half of the catering bill! The caterer called me this morning demanding payment!"

I sat back, watching the circus unfold in my own living room. The grand, sophisticated illusion of the Bennett family was ripping apart at the seams, exposed for what it truly was: a fragile house of cards held together by vanity, debt, and lies.

My mother began weeping uncontrollably. My father and Mark continued screaming at each other, standing toe-to-toe near the Picasso painting, while Chloe sobbed into her hands.

Adrian clicked his fingers twice.

The double doors of the elevator opened, and Marcus stepped out with three imposing security guards.

"Time's up," Marcus announced, stepping between Mark and my father. "Out. All of you."

My family was ushered into the elevator like disgraced trespassers. As the metal doors began to slide shut, my father caught my eye one last time.

"Nora..." he whimpered, his pride completely shattered. "Please..."

The doors closed with a soft ding, leaving behind total, beautiful silence.

I rested my head against the back of the sofa, letting out a long, shuddering breath. Adrian sat beside me, gently taking my hand in his.

May you like

"Are you okay?" he asked quietly.

I looked at him, feeling the warmth of his fingers, and smiled. "For the first time in five years, Adrian... I am completely fine."
