Chapter 4 - THE APOLOGY THAT CAME TOO LATE

When the elevator doors opened directly into our penthouse foyer, my family looked as though they had aged ten years overnight.

My father’s suit was wrinkled. My mother’s makeup was hastily applied. Chloe was wearing sunglasses to hide her swollen, red eyes, and Mark Kessler looked completely shattered, holding a thick leather folder.

They stepped onto the polished marble floors, taking in the soaring twenty-foot ceilings, the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Central Park, and the original Picasso hanging in the hallway.

My mother let out a small, breathless gasp. "Nora... this... this is where you live?"

I sat on the white leather sofa, crossing my legs calmly, sipping my tea. Adrian stood behind my chair, his arms crossed over his chest, looking like a judge presiding over a courtroom.

"Sit down," Adrian said flatly.

None of them moved. They were too intimidated.

My father cleared his throat, trying to muster a grin that looked entirely forced. "Nora, honey... look, about last night—"

"Don't call me honey, Dad," I interrupted, setting my teacup down with a quiet clink. "You haven't called me that since I was twenty-two."

"Nora, please," my mother pleaded, taking a step forward. "We didn't know! You never told us you married Adrian Vance! If we had known you were living like this, we would have treated you completely differently!"

I laughed. It was a cold, bitter sound.

"I know you would have, Mom," I said. "That’s precisely why I never told you. You treat people based on their bank accounts. When you thought I was broke, you sat me at Table Nineteen next to the garbage cans. You let Chloe call my child a brat, and you watched Dad push us into a freezing fountain."

Chloe snapped. "Mark lost three major investors this morning, Nora! Three! Sterling Port’s stock dropped twelve percent at market open because rumors spread that Vance Global pulled out! My marriage is ruined after twelve hours!"

"Your marriage was built on Mark’s status," I replied smoothly. "If his status crumbles, that’s between the two of you."

Mark stepped forward, dropping to his knees on the marble floor right in front of my coffee table. He held out the leather folder.

"Mrs. Vance... Nora... I am begging you," Mark choked out, tears swelling in his eyes. "My board of directors is voting to remove me as CEO at 2:00 PM today unless I present a signed memorandum of understanding from Vance Global. If I lose my position, I lose everything. My house, my stock options... everything."

My father stepped beside Mark. "Nora, as your father, I am asking you to tell your husband to sign Mark's paper. We are family! Family helps family!"

I looked at my father. "Where was 'family' when Lily was shivering in three feet of water, Dad? Where was 'family' when you raised your wine glass and told everyone single moms belong in the gutter?"

My father went pale. "I... I was joking! It was a joke!"

"It wasn't a joke," Adrian spoke up, his deep voice cutting through the room like a razor. "It was abuse. And now comes the payment."

Adrian took the leather folder from Mark’s trembling hands, opened it, tossed it into the gas fireplace near the wall, and watched it ignite into flames.

Mark let out a horrified shriek.

"Sterling Port Solutions is finished," Adrian said coldly. "And as for your real estate business, Richard... I purchased eighty percent of your firm’s commercial debt from Chase Bank twenty minutes ago. You owe my firm $4.2 million, due in full by Friday."

May you like

My father collapsed into an armchair, clutching his chest in genuine horror. "You... you bought my debt?"

"You wanted to teach Nora about choices and consequences," Adrian smiled dangerously. "Consider this your first lesson."
