Chapter 3 - THE AFTERMATH AT DAWN

By 6:00 AM the following morning, my phone had received forty-seven missed calls and thirty-two text messages.

My mother: Nora, please call me! Your father is having chest pains! We had no idea! Why didn't you tell us?!

My father: Nora, we need to speak privately. Mark’s board of directors is threatening to remove him after what happened last night. You are ruining your sister’s marriage!

Chloe: You ruined my wedding! I will never forgive you for this! Tell your husband to stop pulling Mark's contracts!

I sat in the breakfast nook of our Manhattan penthouse, wearing a silk robe, sipping green tea while watching the sunrise over Central Park. The warm, peaceful silence of our home felt like a different universe compared to the humiliation my family had subjected me to for five years.

Adrian walked into the kitchen wearing fleece sweatpants and a dark t-shirt, holding two cups of coffee. He set one down in front of me and kissed the top of my head.

"Lily's still fast asleep," he said softly, sitting across from me. "Her fever dropped back to normal."

"Thank God," I breathed. "I was terrified she'd catch pneumonia from that fountain."

Adrian’s eyes darkened slightly. "Marcus finished gathering the surveillance footage from the estate. The security cameras captured everything—your father putting both hands on your shoulders and physically forcing you into the water."

"Are you going to file charges?"

"That depends entirely on you, Nora," Adrian said, covering my hand with his. "I can have Richard Bennett arrested for misdemeanor assault by noon. Or I can destroy his real estate business quietly. It's your choice. You’ve carried this pain for five years."

I looked at my reflection in the dark glass of my tea mug.

When I met Adrian five years ago, I was a pregnant young woman terrified of my family's judgment. I had met Adrian at a charity gala where I was working as a catering staff member. We fell in love quickly, deeply, and passionately. But when I got pregnant, my parents immediately assumed the worst, calling me a disgraced woman who had ruined her life.

When I saw how eager they were to tear me down, I made a conscious choice: I kept my relationship with Adrian a complete secret. I didn't want his money to shield me from their true feelings; I wanted to see who my family really was when they thought I had nothing to offer them.

For five years, they showed me exactly who they were.

"Don't file police charges yet," I said quietly, looking up at my husband. "A police charge gives them something to play the victim about. They'll tell the country club I'm an ungrateful daughter who put her elderly father in jail."

"Then what do you want to do?" Adrian asked, an intrigued smile tugging at his lips.

"I want them to come to us," I said coldly. "I want them to realize that the 'single mother in the gutter' holds the key to every single thing they care about."

At 8:30 AM, the doorbell chimed downstairs.

Our building’s concierge called up on the intercom. "Mrs. Vance, your parents, sister, and Mr. Mark Kessler are in the lobby. They're demanding to see you. Should I call security?"

I looked at Adrian. He nodded.

"Send them up," I told the concierge. "It's time for breakfast."
