Chapter 2 - THE SHATTERED ILLUSION

The water soaked through Adrian’s thousand-dollar trousers, but he didn't care. He wrapped his coat around Lily and scooped her into his chest, then extended his hand to pull me up over the stone wall.

"Are you hurt, Nora?" he asked softly, his voice trembling with a quiet, lethal edge.

"I'm fine. Lily's cold," I whispered.

"Daddy, Grandpa pushed us!" Lily sobbed against his neck, pointing her small, shivering finger straight at Richard Bennett.

The silence that settled over the Westchester estate was deafening. The laughter died completely. The string quartet had long stopped playing.

Mark Kessler looked as if he had seen a ghost. In the financial world, Adrian Vance was a kingmaker. Sterling Port Solutions—Mark's company—was currently seeking a $150 million liquidity injection from Vance Global Holdings. Mark had spent six months begging for a five-minute meeting with Adrian’s team.

"M-Mr. Vance?" Mark stuttered, stepping forward, his face draining of all color. "I... I don't understand. What is happening here?"

Adrian turned around slowly, holding our wet daughter against his chest. His eyes locked onto Mark, cold and merciless.

"What is happening, Mr. Kessler, is that you just applauded my wife and daughter being assaulted."

"W-Wife?" my mother gasped, clutching her pearls so hard the string looked ready to snap. "Nora? Married to... to Adrian Vance?"

My father stood frozen, his whiskey glass trembling in his hand. "Nora... what is the meaning of this? You told us you were single!"

I squeezed water from my hair, standing tall beside my husband. "I never told you I was single, Dad. You just assumed I was a failure because I refused to share my life with people who only value money."

Chloe stepped forward, her stained dress forgotten. "This is ridiculous! Adrian Vance wouldn't marry a college dropout who lives in a tiny apartment!"

Adrian’s security chief, a imposing former marine named Marcus, stepped up and handed me a warm cashmere blanket from the SUV.

"My wife," Adrian said, his voice echoing across the courtyard, "is the Vice President of Quantitative Strategy at Blackwood Capital. She holds a master’s degree from Columbia, which she finished online while raising our daughter. And the 'tiny apartment' you refer to is a penthouse overlooking Central Park that I purchased in her name four years ago."

My sister’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. My mother looked at me as if I had suddenly transformed into an alien.

"And as for you, Kessler," Adrian continued, fixing his gaze on Mark. "I received your firm’s funding proposal on my desk this morning. I was considering reviewing it on Monday. Consider it officially rejected. In fact, Vance Global will be shorting Sterling Port Solutions starting at 9:00 AM."

Mark dropped to his knees right there on the wet pavers. "Mr. Vance, please! It was a mistake! I didn't know she was your wife! I didn't push her!"

"You laughed," I said coldly, looking down at Mark. "You called my four-year-old daughter trash."

"Nora, please!" my father stepped in, his arrogant demeanor dissolving into desperate begging. "We're family! This is just a misunderstanding! I was just trying to teach her a lesson about family respect—"

"Touch my wife or daughter again, Richard," Adrian interrupted, his tone so terrifying that my father took two steps back, "and I will personally buy out every mortgage on your real estate portfolio and evict you by Friday."

Adrian turned to me, wrapping his arm securely around my waist. "Let's get you and Lily home, sweetheart."

We walked toward the black SUV. Behind us, the wedding reception dissolved into pure chaos. Chloe was screaming at Mark, my mother was yelling at my father, and Mark was hyperventilating on the floor.

As the SUV door shut, leaving the noise behind, Lily snuggled into Adrian’s lap.

"Mommy," Lily whispered, "is Aunt Chloe’s wedding over?"

I looked out the tinted window at my frantic family. "Yes, baby. It's completely over."
