Chapter 10 - THE NEW TABLE

That evening, we celebrated at our penthouse overlooking the glowing city lights.

There were no catering staff, no $20,000 dresses, and no staged photo opportunities.

Just a large wooden table in the dining room, loaded with homemade pasta, garlic bread, fresh fruit, and warm laughter. Marcus, our security chief who had become a close family friend, joined us along with Chloe and a few close colleagues from my firm.

Lily was running around in her pajamas, showing Marcus her latest drawing of a superhero cat, while Adrian cleared the dinner plates.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, holding a glass of Pinot Noir, looking out at the glittering expanse of Manhattan.

Adrian walked up behind me, wrapping his arms securely around my waist, resting his chin softly on my shoulder.

"What are you thinking about, Mrs. Vance?" he murmured softly.

"I was thinking about that night at the wedding fountain," I admitted, turning my head to kiss his cheek. "I remember standing in that freezing water, holding Lily, listening to everyone laugh."

"And now?" Adrian asked softly.

"Now I realize that being thrown into that water was the best thing that ever happened to me," I smiled, looking into his warm brown eyes. "It washed away the last lingering piece of desire I had for their approval. It made me realize I had everything I ever needed right here."

Adrian smiled, tightening his embrace. "You built this life, Nora. I just had the good fortune of being invited into it."

From the dining table, Lily’s sweet, clear voice echoed through the room. "Mommy! Daddy! Come look! Aunt Chloe is teaching me how to make a paper airplane!"

"We're coming, baby!" I called back.

I took Adrian’s hand, stepping away from the window, and walked back toward the table filled with warmth, love, and light.

I had spent years being the daughter they were ashamed of.

But tonight, sitting at my own table surrounded by the people who truly loved me, I knew the truth: I was the woman who had conquered their storm and built a legacy of her own.
