Chapter 9 - The Sunlit Garden

The morning sun broke through the autumn clouds, bathing the Moretti estate in a warm, golden radiance.
The iron front gates stood open, welcoming the morning breeze. The marks of struggle and tension from the past week were entirely erased, replaced by the tranquil beauty of manicured lawns and blooming white roses.
In the grand dining room—the very room where the birthday party had almost turned into a tragedy—a long mahogany table was set for a private family breakfast.
Freshly baked pastries, warm pancakes, fresh fruit, and steaming pots of coffee covered the table. Sunlight streamed through the tall arched windows, turning the crystal glasses into sparkling diamonds.
Ethan and Lily were sitting next to each other at the end of the table, laughing as they tried to build a small tower out of strawberries and butter biscuits.
"Look, Nina!" Lily giggled, pointing at her strawberry tower. "It's a skyscraper!"
Sophia walked into the room carrying a pitcher of fresh orange juice, wearing a lovely light yellow sundress that complemented her dark hair and warm eyes. She looked happy, healthy, and completely at home.
"Don't play with your food, sweetheart," Sophia gently chided, set the pitcher down, and kissed the top of Lily's head.
The double doors opened, and Alessandro walked in.
He wasn't wearing his dark suits or tactical gear today. He wore a comfortable grey cashmere sweater, dark trousers, and no tie. He looked rested, his handsome face filled with an easy, quiet contentment that transformed his entire presence.
Ethan immediately jumped up from his seat. "Dad!"
Alessandro caught his son in a warm embrace, lifting him up before setting him back down. "Good morning, champ. Did you sleep well?"
"Yup! Lily and I built a fort in the living room!" Ethan reported proudly.
Alessandro walked over to the head of the table, his eyes locking onto Sophia. The look they exchanged across the sunny room carried all the weight of the promises made in the dark hallway two nights ago.
"Good morning, Sophia," Alessandro said softly, walking up to her.
"Good morning, Alessandro," she replied, her voice filled with tenderness.
He reached out, taking her hand in his, and brought her fingers to his lips, kissing them softly. Sophia smiled, her cheeks flushing with a beautiful, delicate rose color.
Sitting at the table, Ethan looked over at Lily and whispered loudly, "Are they going to get married?"
Lily giggled, covering her mouth with both hands. "I think so! Then we get to live in the castle forever!"
Alessandro and Sophia both laughed—a rich, shared sound that filled the grand dining hall with genuine joy.
"They're not wrong, you know," Alessandro said quietly to Sophia, holding her hand firmly in his.
Sophia looked up into his dark, soulful eyes. "Is that a proposal, Mr. Moretti?"
"It's a promise, Sophia," Alessandro answered sincerely. "A promise that you and Lily will never have to worry, never have to hide, and never have to feel alone again. You brought life back into this dead house. I want you to make it your home forever."
Tears of pure happiness filled Sophia's eyes as she smiled up at him. "It already is my home, Alessandro."

He pulled her into his arms, wrapping his strong embrace around her, and kissed her softly in front of the sunlit windows. Down at the end of the table, Ethan and Lily cheered and clapped their hands, their joyful laughter echoing off the marble walls.
The dark days were over. The shadows of treason, threat, and grief were entirely gone, replaced by the unbreakable foundation of love, courage, and family.
