Chapter 5 - Shadows of Brooklyn

Three days had passed since the night of the birthday party.

The news of Julian Moretti's sudden "resignation" and immediate disappearance sent shockwaves through the New York underworld. The rival Brooklyn syndicate, led by an ambitious family head named Dominic Falcone, realized their master plan to destroy the Moretti leadership from within had failed miserably.

In his private study on the second floor of the estate, Alessandro stood before a large floor-to-ceiling window, staring out at the sunlit gardens.

Down below in the grass, Lily was running in small circles with a butterfly net, while Ethan sat on a wooden bench showing Sophia how to play a simple melody on a wooden flute. The sound of their clear, easy laughter floated up through the open window.

A quiet knock sounded at the study door.

"Enter," Alessandro said without turning around.

Victor walked into the room, holding a thick leather folder. His expression was grim. "Boss, we finished interrogating Julian's associates. The paper trail is clear. Falcone supplied the liquid explosive and paid Julian two million dollars upfront."

Alessandro turned around slowly, his face composed of hard, unforgiving lines. "Does Falcone know we have the full ledger?"

"Not yet," Victor replied. "He thinks Julian simply failed and fled the country. But Falcone is getting desperate. His shipping permits expire at the end of the month, and without access to our docks, his entire operation collapses."

"Desperate men make sloppy moves," Alessandro observed, walking over to his desk. "Keep two extra security units on the perimeter. No one enters the estate grounds without double verification. Especially around Sophia and Lily."

Victor hesitated for a moment. "Boss... if I may speak freely?"

"Go ahead."

"The captains are talking," Victor said carefully. "Moving Sophia and the child into the east wing... assigning them personal guards... it's unusual for someone outside the bloodline. Some of the older family members think you're letting emotion cloud your judgment."

Alessandro leaned his hands on the dark oak desk, looking at Victor with eyes that could cut through steel. "When my wife died, Victor, those same older family members told me to focus on business and let nannies raise my son. Look where that led. My own cousin tried to blow up my home."

He straightened up to his full height.

"Sophia and Lily saved Ethan. In my book, that makes them closer to family than any blood relative who stayed silent while Julian plotted behind my back. If anyone has a problem with my decisions, tell them to bring it directly to me."

Victor bowed his head respectfully. "Understood, Boss. I'll double the east wing guard detail myself."

Downstairs in the east wing apartment, Sophia was unpacking the last of their belongings into their spacious new living room. The suite was breathtaking—high ceilings, plush rugs, soft cream sofas, and a private balcony overlooking the rose gardens. It was a world away from the cramped, damp garage room they had occupied for two years.

Sophia walked over to a mirror hanging on the wall and looked at her reflection. She was wearing a simple, elegant navy dress that Alessandro had instructed the estate tailor to make for her. She hardly recognized herself. The constant shadow of worry in her dark eyes was starting to fade, replaced by a quiet sense of security.

There was a soft knock on the open apartment door.

Alessandro stood in the doorway, holding a small silver tray with two cups of fresh tea and a plate of warm butter biscuits.

"Mr. Moretti," Sophia said quickly, stepping forward. "You shouldn't be carrying trays! I can get that—"

"Sophia," Alessandro interrupted with a warm, faint smile. "You are the household manager now, not the maid. And in this house, when I want to speak with my friends, I bring the tea."

He walked in and set the tray down on the low glass table. Sophia sat down across from him, feeling a slight flush on her cheeks. Being near Alessandro like this—without the barrier of master and servant—was intimidating, yet strangely comforting.

"How is Lily settling in?" Alessandro asked, taking a cup.

"She loves it," Sophia smiled, her eyes softening. "She thinks we're living in a castle. She keeps asking if you are the king."

Alessandro let out a quiet laugh. "And what do you tell her?"

"I tell her you are a good man who protects people," Sophia answered honestly, looking directly into his eyes. "Because that is the truth."

Alessandro looked down at his tea, a moment of rare vulnerability passing across his strong face. "Not everyone thinks I'm a good man, Sophia. The life I lead... the responsibilities I carry... they force me to make harsh choices."

"I know who you are to the outside world, Mr. Moretti," Sophia said softly, reaching out her hand slightly before pulling it back politely. "But I also see how you look at your son. I see how you treated my daughter when she was just a small voice in a big room. A bad man doesn't kneel in front of a child."

Before Alessandro could reply, the emergency alarm on his wrist unit began to vibrate violently.
