Chapter 2 - The Sound of the Timer

The words seemed to hang in the golden air of the grand hall like smoke before a storm.
For three terrifying seconds, no one drew a single breath. The hundreds of influential figures—men whose words commanded entire industries and guards trained to react in milliseconds—were entirely paralyzed by the sentence delivered by a three-year-old girl.
Alessandro did not flinch. He didn't jump up or shout. His eyes, dark and sharp as shattered obsidian, narrowed slightly.
"Ethan," Alessandro said. His voice was calm, unnaturally steady, carrying the absolute authority of a military commander. "Step away from the table. Walk to your aunt Clara by the front doors. Do not run. Walk."
Eight-year-old Ethan blinked, his young face pale, but he obeyed instantly. He backed away from the towering three-tiered white cake, stepping carefully across the polished floor until his aunt's trembling hands pulled him tightly behind her velvet gown near the double doors.
Only then did Alessandro stand up. He placed his massive frame between the cake, Sophia, and little Lily.
"Everyone," Alessandro announced softly, his voice echoing off the high frescoed ceilings. "Leave the hall quietly. Security will hold the main courtyard. Nobody leaves the estate premises."
Pandemonium threatened to break out. High-society women gasped, pulling their diamond necklaces close, while politicians and associate heads moved swiftly toward the arched exits. Alessandro’s head of security, a heavily built man named Victor who had served the Moretti family for twenty years, rushed forward with two armed guards.
"Boss, let us clear you out first," Victor urged, reaching for Alessandro's arm.
"No," Alessandro commanded, looking down at the cake. "Bring the bomb team from the basement security suite. Now."
Sophia was on her knees, clutching Lily tightly against her chest, her body shaking with uncontrollable sobs. She knew how the world worked for people like her. When tragedy struck powerful families, servants were always the first to be blamed.
"Mr. Moretti, please," Sophia choked out, her dark eyes wide with desperation. "Lily doesn't lie, but... maybe she misunderstood! She's so young! Please don't hurt her!"
Alessandro turned and looked down at Sophia. The coldness that usually guarded his face melted into absolute seriousness. He dropped to one knee again, his long dark jacket sweeping against the marble.
"Sophia," he said gently, reaching out to softly touch Lily's curly hair. "Your daughter just saved my son’s life. No one is going to hurt either of you. You are under my personal protection."
He stood up, his jaw set like iron, and faced the massive cake.
The candles had burned down almost to the frosting. Tiny trails of blue smoke rose into the air. Beside the cake lay the long silver knife he had been about to plunge into the center tier just moments ago. Had he cut into it, the blade would have made contact with whatever was hidden inside.
"Victor," Alessandro called out without looking back. "Where is the bomb squad?"
"They're coming up from the gatehouse, Boss, two minutes," Victor called from the edge of the room.
The hall was empty now, save for Alessandro, Victor, Sophia, Lily, and a few key family lieutenants standing near the exits. The grand room, usually filled with music and laughter, felt eerily massive and hollow.
Then, in the heavy silence of the empty hall, a faint noise emerged.
Tick... tick... tick...
It wasn't the rhythmic chime of the grand grandfather clock in the corner. It was faster. Sharper. A metallic, mechanical countdown coming directly from the center of the three-tiered vanilla cake.
Sophia gasped, covering Lily's ears and pulling her further back toward the marble pillars.
Alessandro stepped closer to the cake. He didn't run. He leaned over the white linen table, listening closely. The smell of sweet vanilla and hot sugar was overwhelmed by something subtle beneath it—the faint, acrid tang of copper wires and industrial explosive material.
"It's active," Alessandro said quietly.
"Boss, get back!" Victor shouted, drawing his firearm.
"The timer is internal," Alessandro observed, his eyes scanning the intricate white piping of the cake's design. "Whoever placed it here didn't just hide a device. They integrated it into the structure during the bakery assembly in our kitchen."
He looked toward the double doors leading to the service hallway. The cake hadn't been delivered from an outside bakery. To ensure Ethan's safety, Alessandro had hired a renowned pastry chef to build the cake inside the Moretti estate's private kitchen under guard supervision.
Which meant the person who placed the device had total access to the inner sanctuary of his home.
The ticking grew slightly faster. Tick-tick-tick-tick.
"Victor," Alessandro said, his tone dropping an octave into pure ice. "Seal the kitchen. Lock down every exit. No one leaves the property—not the chefs, not the guards, not my own brothers."
He turned back to Lily, who was watching him quietly from behind her mother's apron.
"Lily," Alessandro asked softly, keeping his voice entirely calm despite the ticking bomb three feet away. "Did you see the man's shoes? Or his hands?"
Lily nodded slowly, her small fingers clutching her mother's dress. "He had shiny black shoes. And... and he had a shiny silver ring on his thumb. Like a snake."
Alessandro’s eyes flared with a lethal, terrifying realization.

There was only one man in the entire Moretti organization who wore a silver signet ring shaped like a coiled serpent on his left thumb.
A man who had stood right beside Alessandro at the head table five minutes ago.
