Chapter 10 - The Safe House

Six months later.

Spring had arrived in full glory across the Hudson Valley. The Moretti estate was alive with blooming cherry blossoms, vibrant green lawns, and the sweet scent of fresh lavender floating on the warm afternoon breeze.

The glass greenhouse in the back garden—the one Alessandro had gifted to Lily with the silver key—was now fully restored. Bright red strawberries hung thick from healthy vines, while rows of colorful tulips lined the glass walls.

In the center of the garden stood a brand-new white gazebo with a long wooden dining table.

Today was a special day.

It was Lily's fourth birthday.

There were no massive crowds of politicians, no armed guards circling the perimeter in plain sight, and no tense business associates making fake toasts. The gathering was small, intimate, and warm—just Alessandro, Sophia, Ethan, Lily, Aunt Clara, and Victor, who had brought a giant plush teddy bear that was twice as tall as Lily.

In the center of the wooden table sat a simple, beautiful two-tiered strawberry shortcake, baked by Sophia herself, decorated with four small yellow candles.

Lily stood on a wooden chair beside the cake, wearing a adorable white dress with a yellow ribbon. Ethan stood beside her, helping her make sure the four candles stayed lit against the soft spring breeze.

Alessandro stood behind Sophia, his arms wrapped securely around her waist, his chin resting gently on her shoulder as they watched the children together. Sophia wore a brilliant gold diamond ring on her left ring finger—a symbol of their upcoming summer wedding.

"Are you ready to blow out the candles, birthday girl?" Alessandro called out warmly.

Lily looked up at Alessandro, her dark brown eyes sparkling with pure, unadulterated happiness. "I have to make a wish first!"

"Go ahead, sweetie," Sophia smiled, leaning into Alessandro’s warm embrace. "Make a big wish."

Lily closed her eyes tightly, folded her small hands together, and took a deep, dramatic breath. Then, she opened her eyes and blew out all four candles in one single, strong puff.

Everyone clapped and cheered as smoke drifted softly up toward the glass ceiling of the greenhouse.

"What did you wish for, Lily?" Ethan asked, leaning over the table to inspect the cake.

Lily looked at her mother, then at Alessandro, and finally at Ethan. She gave a bright, beautiful smile that could light up the darkest room in the world.

"I wished that we could stay right here," Lily whispered happily, "where it's always safe."

Alessandro looked down at his wife-to-be, then at his son and the little girl who had saved their lives with five quiet words on a rainy night six months ago.

He pulled Sophia closer, holding her tight against his chest as the sound of children’s laughter filled the sunlit garden.

"Your wish came true, little one," Alessandro said softly, his voice full of absolute peace and profound love. "You're already home."
