Chapter 9 - JUSTICE UNBOUND

Three months later.

The Federal Courthouse in downtown Manhattan was packed to absolute capacity. Media crews from around the globe lined the marble steps outside, while inside courtroom 402, the air was cold and solemn.

Judge Harrison sat atop the elevated bench, reviewing the final sentencing documents spread out before him.

In the defense box sat Julian and Victoria Vance. Stripped of their tailored clothes, expensive jewelry, and elite status, they both wore standard orange prison jumpsuits. Victoria’s posture was slouched, her hands resting limply in her lap, while Julian stared blankly at the defense table, looking fifteen years older than he had three months ago.

Marcus sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a dark gray suit, his hands resting calmly on his knees. Next to him sat Eleanor, clutching a leather briefcase containing the final corporate restructuring documents.

The judge cleared his throat, his heavy voice echoing off the wood-paneled walls.

"In the matter of the State and Federal charges against Julian Vance and Victoria Vance," the judge began, looking down over his reading glasses, "this court has reviewed the overwhelming mountain of evidence presented. The acts committed by the defendants were not merely financial crimes of extraordinary greed, but involved the calculated, physical, and psychological abuse of a minor child for personal leverage."

Victoria flinched, closing her eyes tightly.

"For the charges of aggravated child endangerment, conspiracy to commit RICO fraud, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement," Judge Harrison declared, slamming his gavel down, "Julian Vance is hereby sentenced to twenty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole."

A gasp ran through the courtroom gallery. Julian didn't even move; he just stared blankly at the floor.

"Victoria Vance," the judge continued, "for your direct role in the physical restraint and assault of a minor, as well as conspiracy to defraud a legal trust, you are sentenced to eighteen years at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility."

BANG.

The gavel fell a second time, sealing their fate with finality.

As the bailiffs stepped forward to lead the two prisoners away toward the side holding cell, Victoria suddenly turned around. Her eyes locked onto Marcus in the gallery.

"Marcus..." she sobbed, her voice cracking with desperation. "Please... talk to the judge... tell him we were family... please..."

Marcus stood up slowly. He didn't say a word. He didn't curse her, nor did he smile. He simply met her gaze with the same calm, unyielding expression he had carried into the Grand Regency Ballroom. He turned his back on her and walked toward the heavy exit doors of the courtroom.

Behind him, the heavy iron doors of the holding cell slammed shut with a metallic strike, echoing through the marble hallway.

Outside on the courthouse steps, the winter rain had stopped, giving way to bright, clear sunlight breaking through the clouds. A swarm of reporters rushed toward Marcus, waving microphones and screaming questions.

"Mr. Vance! How does it feel to take back control of Vance Global?"

"Mr. Vance! What is the future of the family foundation?"

Marcus stopped at the top of the steps, looking out over the city. He raised one hand, and the reporters fell silent, eager to capture every word.

"The old company is gone," Marcus said clearly, his voice carrying over the crowd. "Vance Global has been liquidated. Every single dollar recovered from the fraud will be placed into a permanent international foundation dedicated to the protection and legal support of abused children."

He paused, looking directly into the primary news camera lens.

"My son and I are starting over. And our story is no longer for sale."
