Chapter 8 - THE ASHES OF GREED

The old Vance Estate in the Hudson Valley was a sprawling Victorian mansion surrounded by dense, dark woods. It had been vacant since Sarah’s passing, serving as a silent shrine to the past.

As Marcus’s black SUV tore up the gravel driveway, rain was falling in heavy sheets, blurring the yellow estate lights ahead.

Standing in the main courtyard was a black sports car with its driver-side door wide open. Smoke was already pouring out of the ground-floor library windows.

"Stay in the car, Thomas," Marcus ordered, pulling a heavy flashlight from the glove compartment.

"Sir, he might be armed," Thomas warned, reaching for his holster.

"I know," Marcus said coldly. "That’s why I’m going in alone."

Marcus slammed the SUV door and strode toward the burning mansion. He pushed through the front entrance, the smell of burning paper and accelerant hitting his nose instantly. Flames were licking up the antique wallpaper of the foyer, casting dancing, demonic shadows across the room.

In the center of the library, surrounded by burning stacks of old family legal files, stood Julian. His suit was rumpled, his hair wildly disheveled, and his eyes bloodshot with pure, chaotic madness. In his right hand, he held a heavy chrome revolver; in his left, a half-empty can of lighter fluid.

"I knew you'd come!" Julian screamed over the roaring crackle of the fire. "You couldn't let me destroy Sarah’s little secrets, could you?!"

Marcus stood in the doorway, completely unbothered by the growing heat or the weapon pointed at his chest.

"You're burning evidence of crimes you've already been charged with, Julian," Marcus said, his voice ringing loud and clear over the fire. "This doesn't save you. It just adds arson to your indictment."

"I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE INDICTMENT!" Julian shrieked, his hand trembling violently on the gun. "You took my money! You took my reputation! You put my wife in a cage! I spent ten years playing second fiddle to you and Sarah! I deserved this estate! I deserved the company!"

"You deserved nothing," Marcus said, taking a slow, deliberate step forward. "You were given every opportunity to be a human being. Instead, you chose to abuse a child because you were too small to fight me."

"Don't take another step!" Julian yelled, raising the revolver with both hands. "I'll kill you, Marcus! I'll shoot you right here and let the fire burn us both!"

Marcus didn't stop. He walked straight toward the barrel of the gun, his chest exposed, his eyes locked onto Julian’s terrified face.

"Pull the trigger then," Marcus said softly, his voice cutting through the panic like a razor. "Shoot me. But look at your hands, Julian. You're shaking. You're a coward who hides behind ropes and little boys. You don't have the stomach to kill a real man."

Julian’s breath hitched. He looked at his hands—they were trembling so violently the gun was swaying side to side. Tears of frustration and terrifying realizations mixed with the soot on his cheeks.

"Shoot me," Marcus repeated, stepping right into point-blank range, pressing his chest against the cold metal barrel of the revolver. "Do it."

Julian stared into Marcus’s eyes, searching for a single grain of fear, a single hint of hesitation. He found none. He found only an endless, dark abyss that was ready to swallow him whole.

With a sob of pure defeat, Julian’s arms collapsed. The gun clattered against the burning floorboards.

Julian fell to his knees in the middle of the flames, burying his face in his hands, weeping like a broken child.

Marcus looked down at him without a shred of pity. He reached out, grabbed Julian by the collar of his ruined suit, and dragged him out of the burning house and into the cold, cleansing rain outside.
