Chapter 7 - THE TIGHTENING NET

The news of the arrests at Vance Global hit the financial district like a thermonuclear blast. By noon, cable news networks were showing live footage of Julian and Victoria Vance being escorted out of the building in handcuffs, surrounded by a wall of flashing blue lights and screaming reporters.

In a quiet, sunlit private clinic on the outskirts of the city, Leo sat on a wide leather couch, coloring in a drawing book with a box of bright crayons. Beside him sat Dr. Aris, the city’s top child psychologist, watching the boy’s relaxed posture with a gentle smile.

The door opened softly, and Marcus stepped in.

Leo’s face instantly lit up. He dropped his crayons and scrambled off the couch, running across the room and leaping into his father’s arms. Marcus caught him securely, holding him tight and kissing his cheek.

"Hey, buddy," Marcus murmured softly. "How are you feeling?"

"Dr. Aris showed me a game with wooden blocks," Leo said proudly, leaning back to look at his dad. "He said I don't have to go to any more grand parties if I don't want to."

Marcus smiled, a genuine, warm smile that hadn't touched his face in years. "You never have to go to one again. I promise."

He put Leo down and motioned for Dr. Aris to step out into the hallway for a moment.

"How is he?" Marcus asked, his tone returning to its serious, protective tone once the door was closed.

"He's resilient, Marcus," Dr. Aris replied, crossing his arms. "Children are remarkably tough when they know they have a protector. The emotional stress from last night was acute, but your immediate intervention prevented long-term psychological trauma. He knows his father fought for him."

Marcus nodded slowly, feeling a massive weight lift from his chest. "Thank you, Doctor."

"However," Dr. Aris added, looking Marcus dead in the eye, "the war isn't over for you, is it? A man doesn't dismantle an empire overnight without collateral damage."

"The damage will be controlled," Marcus said coldly. "The people who hurt him are going to pay until they have nothing left to give."

Just then, Thomas walked down the clinic hallway, holding a phone to his ear. His expression was urgent.

"Sir," Thomas said as he approached. "We have a situation at the precinct."

Marcus turned. "Did the judge grant bail?"

"Not for Victoria," Thomas replied. "But Julian’s legal team found a loophole in an old corporate indemnity clause. They managed to post a emergency ten-million-dollar bond using an undisclosed offshore asset. He was released thirty minutes ago."

Marcus’s eyes narrowed into slits. "Where is he now?"

"He didn't go home," Thomas said, his voice dropping into a dangerous hush. "Our trackers show his vehicle is heading toward the old estate in the valley. The place where your wife's personal archives are kept."

Marcus’s jaw tightened. Julian was desperate. Cornered animals didn't try to win anymore; they tried to burn everything down before they died.

"Get the car," Marcus commanded. "And make sure we're armed."
