Chapter 1 - THE TETHERED HEIR

The chandeliers of the Grand Regency Ballroom cast a warm, golden glow over the two hundred guests assembled below, but the warmth was an illusion. Beneath the sparkling glass and the lush floral arrangements sat a room full of predators dressed in silk and velvet. At the center of the elevated stage stood a backdrop embroidered with gold lettering that read: FAMILY CELEBRATION.

It was meant to be a showcase of unity. Instead, it was an execution.

Standing near the center mic was Victoria Vance, wearing a dark purple gown that clung to her like a shadow. Her face was twisted into a sneer of absolute authority. In front of her stood seven-year-old Leo.

Leo was not standing freely. Heavy brown hemp rope was coiled tightly around his torso, pinning his arms down against his small black suit. His knees trembled, his tiny polished shoes slipping slightly on the slick wooden floor of the stage. Tears fell endlessly down his flushed cheeks, leaving dark tracks on his white collared shirt.

Victoria gripped his small shoulder with knuckles white from pressure, shoving him forward until his mouth was inches from the vintage silver microphone.

“Tell everyone you ruined the party!” Victoria’s voice blasted through the hall’s surrounding speakers, sharp, harsh, and echoing against the high ceilings. “Say it! Tell them what a worthless liar you are!”

The crowd below murmured, but no one stepped forward. In the high-society circles of the city, interfering with the internal discipline of the Vance dynasty was financial suicide. So they watched. They sipped champagne and watched a frightened child suffer.

“I... I didn’t mean to...” Leo sobbed hysterically, his chest heaving inside the restrictive ropes. “I’m sorry! I’m sorry!”

“Not good enough!” Victoria barked, digging her manicured fingernails deeper into his shoulder through the fabric of his jacket. “Look at this room! Look at what you destroyed with your pathetic antics! Speak into the mic!”

Leo closed his eyes tight, trembling violently. He was just a child caught in a web of adult malice, used as a pawn to humiliate his branch of the family tree. Every gasp for air hurt as the ropes bound his ribs tight.

High above the murmuring crowd, at the back of the grand ballroom, stood a pair of massive, carved oak double doors. They remained sealed, holding back the cold autumn air outside.

Victoria raised her hand, preparing to slap the back of the boy’s head to force his mouth against the metal grill of the microphone. “Last chance, you little brat, or I swear you’ll sleep in the cellar tonight—”

BOOM.

The heavy doors did not merely open; they smashed inward, bouncing hard against the mahogany walls.

The chatter in the ballroom died instantly. Two hundred heads turned toward the back of the hall.

Walking through the threshold was Marcus Vance.

He wore a tailored dark suit that absorbed the light rather than reflecting it. His hair was neat, his jaw set in pure granite. Flanking him were two massive bodyguards clad in jet-black tactical uniforms, their movements synchronized and menacing. Marcus did not rush. He walked with a heavy, deliberate pace that sent an electric surge of sheer dread rippling across the polished floorboards. His eyes were cold, locked entirely on the stage.

Recognizing the silhouette at the entrance, Leo let out a shriek that tore through the silent ballroom.

“Daddy!” the boy screamed from the stage, his voice raw with desperation. “Daddy, please help me! I want to go home! Please take me home!”

Marcus didn't break stride. His expression didn't soften; it hardened into something far more dangerous. The tempest had finally arrived.
