Chapter 7 - THE TRIAL OF SHADOWS

The main courtroom of the Federal District Court was packed to maximum capacity.
Spectators, journalists, and legal scholars filled every wooden bench. At the defense table sat Arthur Vance, wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, his hands restrained by waist chains. Beside him sat Detective Miller, looking broken and gaunt in his matching prison uniform.
Behind the prosecution table sat Rachel and Emily, watching intently as Prosecutor Sterling stood before the jury box.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury," Sterling's deep voice boomed through the high-ceilinged room. "The defense will try to tell you that this case is about complicated financial transactions and bitter family disputes. But the evidence will show you a much simpler, darker truth: it is about greed, power, and a systematic attempt to silence a brave woman."
Sterling walked over to the AV presentation cart, hitting a key on her laptop.
The large flat-screen monitors mounted across the courtroom lit up.
The video recorded from Emily's cracked phone began to play.
The high-definition video showed the bedroom, scattered debris, and Mark looming over Emily while she lay injured on the floor. His harsh words, his attempt to fabricate a lie about her slipping, and his sudden panic when Rachel and the police entered the room played with crystal clarity.
In the gallery, several jurors gasped, covering their mouths in shock.
Arthur Vance closed his eyes, leaning his head down, unable to look at the undeniable proof of his organization's downfall. Beside him, Detective Miller buried his face in his hands, weeping silently.
Rachel watched the jury's reactions. She knew the trial was effectively over before it had even truly begun. The cold, unyielding reality of captured truth was impossible to refute.
After three hours of prosecution testimony and the presentation of the physical ledgers recovered from the basement, Arthur Vance's lead defense attorney stood up, his posture slumped in defeat.
"Your Honor," the defense attorney said in a quiet, resigned tone. "My client wishes to change his plea to guilty on all counts."
A wave of loud whispers rippled through the gallery.
Judge Harrison knocked his wooden gavel three times. BANG! BANG! BANG!
"Order in the court!" Judge Harrison commanded. He looked down over his reading glasses at Arthur Vance. "Mr. Vance, do you understand that by pleading guilty to these charges, you forfeit all rights to appeal and face a sentence of up to thirty years in federal custody?"
Vance stood up slowly, his waist chains rattling softly in the quiet room. His arrogant posture was completely gone.
"I understand, Your Honor," Vance whispered softly.
"Then this court accepts your plea," Judge Harrison declared, bringing his gavel down hard. "Sentencing will take place in thirty days. Remand the defendants to federal custody."

As the marshals led Vance and Miller out through the side door, Rachel stood up, pulling Emily into a tight, emotional hug.
The courtroom broke into quiet applause from spectators and press alike. Justice had been delivered swiftly, completely, and without compromise.
