Chapter 4 - THE DOCKLAND CONFRONTATION

The rain swept across the wooden planks of Pier 14, carrying the salty tang of the dark bay water below.

Rachel sat in her dark sedan, watching the two figures standing fifty yards away under the flickering amber streetlights. Her hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly her gloves creaked.

My own mentor, she thought bitterly. Five years of working cases together, and he was bought by Vance all along.

She pulled her phone out, quickly taking a high-resolution screenshot of the threat sent to her, then forwarding the image directly to the Chief of Police's private encrypted line, along with her current GPS location.

She took a deep, steadying breath, picked up the metallic briefcase, stepped out of her car into the rain, and slammed the door shut.

Miller looked visibly uncomfortable as Rachel approached, his eyes darting toward the ground before meeting her steady, furious gaze. Arthur Vance, however, held his head high, a smirking smile gracing his refined features.

"You brought the trash with you, Miller," Rachel said coldly, stopping ten paces away from them.

Miller sighed, pulling his coat tighter against the wind. "Rachel, please understand. You're out of your depth here. Vance Financial isn't just a firm—it controls half the infrastructure of this city. You can't fight this machine."

"How much did he pay you, Miller?" Rachel demanded, her voice cutting through the sound of crashing waves. "How much was your integrity worth? A pension? A house on the lake?"

"It was enough to secure my family's future!" Miller barked back defensively, his posture tightening. "If you hand over the briefcase right now, Arthur will ensure your sister receives top-tier treatment overseas, and all charges against you will vanish."

Arthur Vance stepped forward, leaning on his umbrella like a walking cane. "You're a stubborn woman, Detective Carter. Just like your sister. Emily thought she could use Mark's sloppy mistakes to blackmail her way out of her marriage. Look where it got her."

Rachel's eyes narrowed into slits. "Emily didn't blackmail anyone. She was trying to escape a domestic predator!"

"Mark was a fool who fell in love with his victim," Vance sneered dismissively. "He was supposed to manage the hospital's shell accounts, not get caught on video beating his wife like a common thug. But that doesn't change the fact that those hard drives belong to me."

Vance gestured to the phone in his pocket. "My associate is standing inside your sister's room at Riverside right now. One phone call from me, and potassium chloride enters her IV stream. Cardiac arrest within thirty seconds. The doctors will assume it was trauma complications from her injuries."

Rachel reached into her coat pocket, pulling out the metallic briefcase and holding it out over the dark, churning water below the pier.

Vance's smile froze. "What are you doing?"

"This pier is eighty feet above the bay," Rachel said, her voice dropping to a terrifyingly calm level. "The tide is pulling out toward the deep channel. If I drop this case right now, it sinks to the ocean floor. You'll spend the next ten years trying to recover drives ruined by saltwater."

"If you drop that, your sister dies!" Vance shouted, his composure finally cracking.

"If my sister dies," Rachel said, taking a step closer to the edge, "I have nothing left to lose. And a detective with nothing left to lose is your worst nightmare, Vance."

For five agonizing seconds, the only sound was the howling wind and the rain hitting the wooden deck.

Suddenly, from the far end of the industrial road, blinding high-beam lights cut through the thick fog. The loud, heavy wail of state police sirens echoed across the water.

Four tactical police cruisers backed by an armored SWAT vehicle roared onto the pier, setting up an immediate blockade.

Vance turned his head sharply, his face turning pale. "What is this?!"

"I didn't send the data to Miller," Rachel said with a dark, triumphant smile, lowering the briefcase from the edge. "I sent it directly to State Internal Affairs twenty minutes ago. Along with your text threat."

Over the SWAT vehicle's loudspeaker, a booming voice commanded: "THIS IS THE STATE POLICE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS AND GET ON THE GROUND IMMEDIATELY!"

Miller's face completely drained of color. He dropped his service pistol onto the wet wooden planks, raising his hands slowly into the air. "Rachel... please..."

"Shut up, Miller," Rachel spat.

Vance tried to turn toward his black SUV, but two tactical officers tackled him hard onto the rain-slicked deck, forcing his arms behind his back and snapping steel handcuffs around his wrists.

May you like

"Arthur Vance, you are under arrest for attempted murder, extortion, and conspiracy!" an officer shouted over the noise of the rain.

Rachel didn't stay to watch them drag Vance away. She sprinted back to her sedan, threw herself into the driver's seat, turned on her police strobes, and sped toward Riverside Hospital.
