Chapter 3 - THE BAYSIDE AMBUSH

The dark basement felt instantly smaller, suffocatingly tight, as the two armed men stepped down the wooden stairs with methodical, tactical precision.

"Drop your weapon, Detective," Vance's calm voice instructed from the top landing. "You're a good officer, Rachel. Don't throw your life away over Mark's incompetence. Leave the briefcase, walk away, and your sister gets the finest medical care money can buy."

Rachel tightened her grip on her service weapon. Her mind worked at lightning speed, calculating angles, cover, and exit routes.

"Emily's injuries aren't for sale, Vance," Rachel spat back, her deep voice echoing off the damp concrete walls.

Without another word, Rachel raised her pistol and fired two quick shots into the exposed copper water pipe directly above the mercenaries' heads.

BANG! BANG!

High-pressure boiling water erupted from the ruptured pipe, spraying directly into the faces of the two men. They shrieked in pain, their vision instantly blinded by steam and scalding water, firing their weapons wildly into the dark cellar.

THUD! THUD! THUD!

Silenced rounds chewed into the concrete pillar behind which Rachel crouched.

Rachel grabbed the heavy metallic briefcase, tucked it under her arm, and charged toward the old cellar storm door at the back of the basement. She kicked the rusted iron latch with all her weight.

BANG!

The double doors burst open into the muddy backyard.

Rachel scrambled up the slippery wooden steps into the pouring rain. She sprinted through the narrow alleyway between the townhouses, her boots splashing through deep puddles, her lungs burning against the cold night air.

Behind her, heavy boots pounded against the wet asphalt as the two mercenaries recovered and gave chase.

"Target is heading east toward the docks!" one of the men barked into his shoulder radio.

Rachel reached her unmarked police sedan parked two blocks away. She unlocked the door, threw the heavy briefcase into the passenger seat, leaped behind the wheel, and slammed her foot onto the accelerator.

The tires squealed against the slick street as the sedan launched forward, throwing up a spray of water behind it.

As she merged onto the coastal highway, Rachel picked up her phone and dialed Detective Miller's direct line.

"Miller! It's Rachel!" she shouted over the roar of the engine.

"Rachel? Where are you? The precinct just got a call from Mark's legal team—"

"Forget Mark's legal team!" Rachel interrupted sharply. "Mark was laundering money for Arthur Vance and Vance Financial. I have the master ledgers right here in my car. They're tied to illegal medical contracts at Riverside!"

Silence fell over the line for three agonizing seconds.

"Rachel... listen to me very carefully," Miller's voice suddenly sounded tight, devoid of its usual casual tone. "Where are you right now?"

"I'm heading north on Bayside Drive toward the main precinct," Rachel said, checking her rear-view mirror. "I need tactical backup and a secure evidence locker."

"Don't come to the precinct," Miller instructed quietly. "Meet me at the old boatyard near Pier 14. I'll call state investigators directly. We can't trust the local precinct grid—Vance has eyes everywhere."

Rachel hesitated. Something in Miller's tone felt slightly off, but he had been her mentor for five years.

"Okay. Pier 14. Ten minutes," she said, hanging up the phone.

She steered the sedan off the highway, cutting down the deserted industrial road that led to the abandoned docks. The rusted cranes and giant shipping containers loomed out of the fog like sleeping steel monsters.

She pulled up beside an empty warehouse, turning off her headlights. Rain drummed steadily on the roof of her car.

Rachel grabbed her flashlight, opening the briefcase again to inspect the third encrypted hard drive. On the casing was a silver label: PROPERTY OF RIVERSIDE ICU - PATIENT DATA SYSTEM.

Her phone buzzed. A text message from an unknown number appeared on her screen.

It was an image.

Rachel clicked it open. Her heart stopped beating.

The image showed Emily's hospital room at Riverside. Beside Emily's bed stood a man in a white doctor's coat, holding a syringe filled with clear fluid right above her IV line.

Beneath the image was a short message:

HAND OVER THE LEDGER AT PIER 14, OR YOUR SISTER DOESN'T SURVIVE THE NIGHT.

Rachel stared at the screen, her body trembling with a mixture of terror and white-hot fury. She looked out her windshield through the rain-streaked glass.

Headlights flashed at the far end of the dock. A black SUV pulled up, followed immediately by Detective Miller's unmarked cruiser.

Miller stepped out of his car, holding his rain coat tight around his chest. Beside him stepped Arthur Vance, holding a sleek silver umbrella.

Rachel realized the horrifying truth in an instant. Miller hadn't brought state investigators. Miller was working for Vance.
