Chapter 7 - HEALING THE SCARS

A month had passed since the purge of the Moretti family network.
The rainy autumn had given way to a crisp, clear winter. Sunlight reflected brightly off the snow-covered lawn surrounding the Moretti estate.
Inside the main living room, a massive Christmas tree stood near the fireplace, decorated with golden ribbons, crystal ornaments, and twinkling warm lights.
Elena sat on the sofa, knitting a wool scarf, a peaceful, contented smile on her face. For the first time in years, the heavy weight of fear, paranoia, and sorrow had completely lifted from her heart.
In the center of the rug, five-year-old Sophia sat playing with a brand-new, hand-carved wooden dollhouse. Beside her sat a brand-new brown teddy bear—custom made with reinforced seams and a small silver crest stamped on its paw bearing the Moretti family falcon.
The double doors opened, and Alessandro walked into the room. He wore a cozy dark gray cardigan over a white shirt, carrying a tray with two cups of hot chocolate topped with marshmallows.
"Uncle Alessandro!" Sophia squealed happily, jumping up and running toward him.
Alessandro set the tray down carefully on the coffee table and knelt down, catching Sophia in a warm, gentle embrace, lifting her up into his arms effortlessly.
"How is my brave little detective today?" Alessandro chuckled, tapping her nose playfully.
"Look!" Sophia held up a new crayon drawing. "I drew our house! And look—no bad men anywhere!"
Alessandro looked at the drawing. It showed the grand estate under a bright yellow sun, with crude figures representing Alessandro, Elena, Sophia, and Gabriel standing together holding hands near a giant green tree.
Alessandro felt a profound warmth fill his chest—a feeling he hadn't experienced since his own son had passed away years ago.
"It is the most beautiful drawing in the world, Sophia," Alessandro said softly, kissing her cheek before setting her down near her dollhouse.
He sat on the sofa across from Elena, handing her a mug of hot chocolate.
"How are you feeling, Elena?" he asked gently.
"I feel safe," Elena replied, looking into his eyes with deep sincerity. "For three years after Michael died, I felt like we were living on borrowed time. But now... I know we have a home."
"You will always have a home here," Alessandro stated firmly. "I have updated my legal will and family trust through our estate attorneys. The Moretti legitimate assets—our shipping lines, real estate holdings, and charitable foundations—have been placed into an irrevocable trust."
Elena blinked in surprise. "A trust?"
"Half of the estate defaults directly to Sophia when she turns twenty-one," Alessandro explained with a proud smile. "And you are named the sole executor of the foundation starting today. You will manage our community outreach programs, funding children's hospitals and educational scholarships across the state."

Tears of joy welling in her eyes, Elena reached across the table and took Alessandro’s hand. "Uncle Alessandro... I don't know how to thank you."
"You don't need to thank me," Alessandro said softly, looking over at Sophia laughing as she arranged her toys. "She saved my life with a crayon and an observant heart. I am simply ensuring that her future is as bright as her spirit."
