Chapter 2 - THE ANATOMY OF TREASON

The subterranean holding facility beneath the Moretti estate was a cold, windowless sanctuary of reinforced concrete and soundproof steel. Rainwater dripped somewhere in the dark, creation a echoing, hollow sound.

Victor Salvatore sat strapped to a heavy iron chair in the center of the room. His Italian wool jacket was gone, his tie loosened, and his slicked-back hair falling in disheveled strands over his damp forehead. Standing in the shadows across from him was Gabriel, the Chief of Security—a towering man built like a fortress, with a scarred jaw and eyes that had seen two decades of mob warfare.

The heavy steel door groaned open, and Don Alessandro Moretti stepped into the concrete chamber. He wore a crisp dark vest over his tailored shirt, carrying a thick manila folder under his arm.

"Alessandro..." Victor rasped, his voice dry and trembling. "You're making a catastrophic mistake. After twenty-five years at your side? After everything we built together? You're trusting the misinterpretation of a five-year-old child over my loyalty?"

Alessandro didn't answer immediately. He walked to a metal table, laid the manila folder flat, and pulled out three high-resolution spectral analysis reports provided by an independent forensic chemist who had been rushed to the mansion two hours ago.

"The daily tablets I take for my heart condition are 100 milligrams of diltiazem," Alessandro said softly, his voice echoing off the damp concrete walls. "The pills inside my bottle this morning were 100 milligrams of pure potassium cyanide mixed with chalk binder. Formulated to dissolve slowly in the stomach, mimicking a fatal, natural myocardial infarction within forty-five minutes of ingestion."

Victor’s jaw tightened. "Someone swapped them! A house servant! One of the kitchen staff! I knew nothing about it!"

Alessandro stepped closer, leaning down until his dark eyes were inches from Victor’s face.

"The digital audit trail from our internal server shows that the video feed from corridor three was edited at 8:14 AM using an encryption key assigned to only two people in this family," Alessandro whispered. "Me... and you."

Victor swallowed hard, a cold sweat breaking across his collar.

"Who paid you, Victor?" Alessandro asked quietly. "Was it the Luciano family from Chicago? Or was it my brother-in-law, Marco?"

Victor closed his eyes, his breathing heavy and ragged. "You don't understand, Alessandro... the landscape is changing. The commission in New York... they don't want your old-world morals anymore. They don't want a Don who refuses to run synthetic drugs through the docks. They offered me everything. My own territory. Full immunity."

"They offered you a empire built on my grave," Alessandro said, his tone dropping into a deadly whisper. "And you traded twenty-five years of brotherhood for a handful of dirt."

Alessandro turned to Gabriel. "Keep him alive. I want every name, every offshore bank account, and every dirty politician in his ledger before the sun rises tomorrow."

"Understood, Don Moretti," Gabriel replied, stepping forward into the light.

Upstairs in the private family wing of the estate, the atmosphere was thick with anxiety.

Elena sat on the plush sofa in the nursery room, holding a mug of warm tea with shaking hands. Little Sophia lay on her small bed, fast asleep, hugging her brown teddy bear tightly against her chest. The rain outside had settled into a steady, soft drizzle.

The wooden door clicked open, and Alessandro walked in. The terrifying aura of the underworld boss vanished instantly, replaced by the tired, protective gaze of a grandfatherly figure.

Elena stood up quickly. "Uncle Alessandro... is... is it over?"

"For tonight, yes," Alessandro said gently, sitting on the edge of Sophia’s bed. He reached out with his broad, calloused hand and gently brushed a lock of golden hair from the sleeping girl's forehead. "She saved my life, Elena. If she hadn't noticed the sound of the pills... if she hadn't drawn that picture..."

"She pays attention to everything," Elena whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "Since my husband died... she’s been so observant. She noticed the bottle didn't make the same heavy clink when you set it down yesterday."

"She has the Moretti blood," Alessandro said, a rare, soft smile touching his lips. "Sharp, intuitive, and fearless."

Alessandro stood up, turning to Elena with a serious expression. "Victor wasn't working alone. There are factions within our organization that believe I have grown soft because I protect this family above profit. Until I sweep this house clean, you and Sophia are under 24-hour armed escort. Gabriel’s best men will guard this door."

"Are we in danger?" Elena asked softly.

"Not while I breathe," Alessandro promised, his eyes flashing with lethal determination. "I lost my nephew—your husband—to a coward’s ambush three years ago. I will not lose you or Sophia. Rest now, Elena. Tomorrow, the Moretti family answers this insult."
