Chapter 3 - THE CHICAGO CONNECTION

The autumn wind whipped bitterly off Lake Michigan, rattling the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of a penthouse suite in downtown Chicago.

Don Mateo Luciano sat in a dark leather armchair, smoking a Cuban cigar, swirling a glass of twenty-year-old scotch. Mateo was forty-five, sharp-featured, dressed in an flamboyant Italian suit, representing the new wave of American organized crime—ruthless, greedy, and devoid of traditional honor codes.

Sitting across from him was Marco Moretti—Alessandro’s ambitious, snake-like brother-in-law.

"He knows," Marco said nervously, pacing back and forth across the Persian rug. "Victor didn't check in at midnight as planned. My contacts inside the Moretti estate say Victor was dragged into the basement hours ago!"

Mateo took a slow drag from his cigar, blowing a thin ring of blue smoke toward the ceiling. "Calm down, Marco. So the old man got lucky. A minor setback."

"A minor setback?!" Marco shouted, spinning around. "Alessandro is going to tear the Midwest apart! If Victor breaks under interrogation, he’ll tell him about our secret agreement! He’ll tell him about the shipment coming through the Detroit docks next week!"

Mateo set his scotch glass down on the glass table with a sharp click. His eyes narrowed into cold, reptilian slits.

"Victor won't talk," Mateo said smoothly. "Because Victor doesn't know the full extent of our operation. He was just a useful pawn who thought he was going to be king of Seattle."

"What are we going to do?" Marco stammered, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Alessandro has fifty loyal soldiers surrounding that estate. It's a fortress!"

Mateo stood up, buttoning his jacket. He walked to the window, looking out over the glittering lights of Chicago.

"If you want to kill a lion, Marco, you don't attack his claws," Mateo said, a sinister smile spreading across his face. "You strike at his heart."

"His heart?" Marco blinked. "Alessandro has no heart. He’s a machine."

"He has a weakness," Mateo corrected softly. "The widow and the child. My sources tell me the little girl was the one who spotted the poisoned bottle. Alessandro considers her sacred now. If we snatch the girl and her mother, Alessandro will walk straight into our hands without firing a single bullet."

Marco gasped. "Snatching Elena and Sophia from inside the Moretti compound? That's suicide! Gabriel’s security team is impenetrable!"

"No security system is impenetrable when you have the blueprints," Mateo replied, pulling a silver encrypted flash drive from his vest pocket and tossing it onto the table. "Victor gave us the blind spots in the perimeter cameras two days ago before he was caught. We strike tonight, while Alessandro is busy dealing with his internal cleanup."

Back in Seattle, at the Moretti estate, three o'clock in the morning brought a heavy, suffocating fog off the bay.

Inside the subterranean control room, Gabriel stood surrounded by twenty glowing surveillance monitors. His radio crackled with static as security teams reported from various perimeter posts.

"Post One, all clear," a voice reported. "Post Two, all clear," another voice added.

Gabriel rubbed his tired eyes. Something felt wrong. The air was too still, the night too quiet.

Suddenly, monitor four—showing the eastern garden gate—flickered with static, then reset to a frozen image of an empty lawn.

Gabriel’s tactical instincts kicked in instantly. He tapped his radio mic. "Post Four, respond. Report status."

Silence.

"Post Four, do you copy?" Gabriel barked, drawing his 9mm sidearm from his holster.

Only white noise filled the speaker.

"Security breach on the eastern perimeter!" Gabriel shouted into the main channel, hitting the red alarm button on the console. Siren lights began to flash crimson throughout the hallways of the estate. "All teams, seal the main house! Protect the family wing immediately!"

In the upstairs nursery, Elena woke up with a sharp gasp as the alarm sirens wailed through the walls.

She leaped out of bed, rushing to Sophia’s crib. "Sophia, wake up baby!"

Sophia rubbed her eyes, hugging her brown teddy bear. "Mommy? What’s that sound?"

Before Elena could answer, the heavy oak door of the nursery shattered inward.

Two masked men dressed in black tactical gear burst into the room, flashbang grenades primed in their hands.

"Don't move!" one of the men growled, pointing an assault rifle at Elena.

Elena threw herself over Sophia, screaming for help: "ALESSANDRO! GABRIEL! HELP!"

One of the attackers stepped forward, pressing a cloth soaked in chloroform over Elena’s mouth and nose. Elena fought wildly, scratching at his mask, but within seconds her eyes rolled back and her body went limp.

"Mommy!" Sophia shrieked, kicking her tiny legs. "Let go of my mommy!"

The second attacker roughly picked up Sophia, wrapping her in a heavy black blanket to muffle her cries, while the first man slung the unconscious Elena over his shoulder.

By the time Alessandro and Gabriel sprinted into the hallway with weapons drawn, the nursery was empty. The window leading to the fire escape was wide open, the cold fog rolling into the room like a ghost.

On the floor near the crib lay Sophia’s brown teddy bear, its cotton arm torn, lying in a pool of shattered glass.

Alessandro knelt down, picking up the small toy with trembling, blood-stained hands. His jaw tightened so hard a muscle twitched beneath his skin.

"Gabriel..." Alessandro’s voice was terrifyingly quiet—a sound that made even the battle-hardened security chief shudder.

"Yes, Don Moretti?"

"Call every capo in the state," Alessandro commanded, standing up, his eyes burning with absolute, lethal vengeance. "We are going to war."
