Chapter 1 - THE INNOCENCE THAT SAVED A DON

The rain tapped relentless, rhythmic fingers against the tall, arched windows of the Moretti estate, reflecting off the polished marble floors of the grand dining room. Under the warm glow of a massive crystal chandelier, Alessandro Moretti—known throughout the underworld simply as Don Moretti—sat at the head of the long mahogany table. In his late fifties, with silvered hair and eyes like chipped obsidian, Alessandro radiated an aura of quiet, deadly authority.
He held a single white tablet inches from his lips, taking a slow breath. Beside his plate sat a crystal glass of water and an amber prescription bottle. Standing poised half a step behind him was Victor Salvatore, his trusted advisor and right-hand man for twenty-five years.
Suddenly, pitter-patter footsteps broke the heavy silence.
Five-year-old Sophia, wearing a bright yellow knitted sweater and clutching a worn brown teddy bear under her arm, stepped into the frame near the dining entrance. She raised a tiny, determined finger, pointing straight at the glass.
Behind her, her mother, Elena—the widow of Alessandro’s late nephew—rushed into the doorway, her face pale with sudden panic as she reached out to grab her daughter’s shoulder.
"Sophia! No!" Elena gasped.
Sophia’s innocent, clear voice rang through the cavernous room: “The pill is wrong.”
Victor stepped forward smoothly, his dark suit immaculate. A warm, deceptive smile spread across his face as he gestured dismissively toward Elena and the little girl.
"With respect, Alessandro..." Victor offered a calm, dismissive chuckle, his tone oozing polished charm. "She’s only five. Children have vivid imaginations after a thunderstorm."
Alessandro lowered his hand slowly, setting the white tablet down on the white tablecloth. He looked from the pill to Sophia, his dark eyes intense, evaluating every inch of the child's expression.
Unfazed by Victor, Sophia pulled a folded piece of paper from her sweater pocket and held it out with both hands.
"That bottle sounds different," Sophia said, her voice unwavering. "It sounded softer yesterday."
Alessandro gestured for the girl to approach. Sophia walked up without fear, handing over the paper.
Alessandro unfolded the sheet. It was a crude crayon drawing showing a crude illustration of the amber prescription bottle alongside two distinct rows of circles—one row large, one row small—and the timestamp 8:12 scribbled in red crayon in the corner.
Alessandro’s eyes hardened into glacial steel. He picked up the amber prescription bottle from the table and gently shook it near his right ear. Instead of the familiar, crisp plastic rattle of his daily blood pressure medication, a dull, soft thud echoed inside the container.
Alessandro glanced up. Victor’s calm, relaxed posture slightly stiffened. A subtle, fleeting flicker of panic passed through the advisor’s eyes before he masked it with a forced smile.
"I know exactly how old she is, Victor," Alessandro said with cold, quiet authority.
Alessandro pulled his sleek black smartphone from his breast pocket just as a discreet notification chimed. Gabriel, his head of security, had sent an encrypted video feed.
Alessandro tapped the screen. The display showed black-and-white security camera footage of the grand corridor outside his private study: at 8:11 AM, the video clearly showed Sophia sitting on the hallway carpet drawing with her crayons... then a sudden, unnatural jump-cut glitch skipped directly to 8:18 AM.
Six minutes and forty-three seconds erased.
Behind Sophia, Elena gasps softly in disbelief, covering her mouth with her hand. Victor took half a step backward toward the shadows, realizing with horror that the trap had sprung.
"Could... could it be a camera malfunction?" Elena whispered in shock.
Alessandro slowly set his phone face down on the marble table with a heavy, ominous clink that seemed to echo through the entire mansion.
He rose from his high-backed velvet chair, drawing himself up to his full, towering height. He turned his full, lethal gaze directly onto Victor.
Victor stood completely paralyzed in the warm dining room light as three tall, dark-suited security guards stepped silently into the doorway behind him, blocking every exit.

"Our cameras never fail by accident, Victor," Alessandro said in a deep, lethal tone.
The twenty-five-year reign of trust was over. The war for the Moretti empire had just begun.
