Chapter 8 - The Morning After

The morning sun washed through the towering floor-to-ceiling windows of my penthouse apartment overlooking the city skyline.

The air was crisp, clean, and entirely still. There was no smell of Eric’s expensive cologne lingering in the hallway. There were no hushed phone calls, no hidden text messages, no looming shadows of deceit.

I stood on the private balcony holding a mug of black coffee, watching the city wake up far below. Traffic moved in steady, orderly lines across the bridges. Down in the financial district, the glass towers of Vantage Meridian stood tall and secure—not as a prison of lies, but as a foundation of absolute control.

My phone rested on the glass table behind me, silent. My parents had called late last night, their voices choked with emotion and profound relief. They hadn't realized the depth of the trap Marcus had set, nor the scale of the fortification I had built around myself before the battle even began.

I took a slow sip of the coffee, letting the warmth spread through my chest.

People often mistake patience for weakness. They assume that a woman who stays quiet while her husband plays his games is a victim waiting to be rescued. They don't understand that true strategy requires silence. It requires letting the enemy expose their own flanks, build their own false sense of security, and walk willingly into the trap.

The game was over. The board was cleared. And every single piece on it was mine.
