Chapter 10 - The Quiet Victory

The stone cabin by the lake in Vermont greeted me with the familiar, earthy scent of pine and fresh mountain air.
As the private jet touched down on the nearby regional airstrip, a local car service brought me the rest of the way up the winding dirt road. The sun was just beginning to dip below the jagged peaks of the mountains, casting a brilliant golden glow across the glassy surface of the water.
I stepped out onto the wooden wrap-around porch, taking a deep, satisfying breath of the crisp northern air.
There were no board meetings waiting for me here. No federal indictments to review. No backstabbing relatives or unfaithful spouses.
Just peace.
A gentle crunch of gravel announced the arrival of a familiar black sedan coming up the driveway. Grant Miller stepped out, carrying two steaming mugs of coffee and a warm pastry from the local bakery in town.
"Thought you might need some provisions after your week of conquering Wall Street," Grant said with an easy smile as he walked up the porch steps.
"You read my mind, Grant," I replied, taking one of the mugs and leaning against the wooden railing.
We stood together in comfortable silence, watching the sun set behind the pine trees, painting the evening sky in shades of amber, violet, and deep blue.
The storm had passed. The wreckage of the past had been cleared away by the unyielding march of justice and strategy. And in its place stood something far stronger, far purer, and entirely unbreakable.

I raised my coffee mug toward the horizon in a silent toast to the journey behind me.
The battle was won. The war was over. And the rest of my life was finally beginning.
