Chapter 9 - A Place to Call Home

By the following autumn, exactly one year after the fateful storm, Andrew and Ashley packed the last of their boxes from the small rental home on Oak Street.
With his new executive salary and the overwhelming support from the public fund, Andrew had purchased a beautiful, light-filled three-bedroom house sitting on two acres of green lawn at the edge of town. The house featured a large front porch, a bright workshop for Andrew, and a sprawling backyard with an wooden swing set for Ashley and Lucky the dog.
Officer Natalie helped them unload the final box of kitchen supplies.
"Look at this place, Andrew," Natalie said, leaning against the kitchen counter with a mug of hot coffee. "It’s incredible."
"It's a dream," Andrew smiled, looking out the kitchen window at Ashley running across the grass with her puppy. "A year ago, I was sitting at that rental table wondering if I could afford Ashley’s fever medicine. Now she has a home that no one can ever take away from her."
Natalie smiled softly, looking at Andrew. Over the past year, their bond had grown deep and unbreakable—rooted in the shared nightmare of that rain-swept night and the beautiful recovery that followed.
"You earned every inch of this, Andrew," Natalie said softly.
Andrew stepped over, looking into Natalie’s eyes. "We couldn't have done it without you, Natalie. You were the only one who looked at that house and saw the truth. You saved my daughter, and you saved me."
Natalie reached out, taking his hand gently in hers. "We're a team now, Andrew."

From the backyard, Ashley called out: "Daddy! Natalie! Come look at the treehouse!"
Andrew and Natalie walked out onto the sunlit back porch together, holding hands, watching Ashley laugh as she swung high into the autumn air.
