Chapter 6 - The Neighbor's Repentance

Two weeks later, the day before Andrew was scheduled to be discharged from the hospital in a wheelchair to begin months of physical therapy, an unexpected knock came at his hospital room door.
Natalie opened the door to reveal Mrs. Gable, the neighbor who had filmed the viral video.
Mrs. Gable looked smaller, worn down by guilt, holding a large wicker basket filled with homemade soups, baked goods, and a card signed by every resident on Oak Street.
She stood in the doorway, unable to make eye contact with Andrew, who was sitting up in bed with Ashley drawing pictures beside him.
"Andrew," Mrs. Gable said, her voice shaking violently. "I... I don't expect you to ever forgive me."
The room was quiet.
"I stood on that porch and said terrible things about you," Mrs. Gable wept, tears streaming down her wrinkled cheeks. "I judged you without knowing the truth. I caused so much pain to you and this sweet little girl... I haven't been able to sleep a single night since the press conference."
Andrew looked at the elderly woman. For two weeks, he had felt the sting of knowing how quickly his community had turned on him when he was lying broken in a creek bed. But as he looked at his daughter, who was alive, healthy, and safe, he felt the heavy weight of anger lift from his chest.
"Mrs. Gable," Andrew said softly, his voice calm and steady. "When my wife passed away four years ago, I promised myself I would never let bitterness into this house. I was terrified down in that ravine. All I thought about was whether anyone would help my girl."
He motioned toward the chair beside his bed.
"You made a mistake," Andrew continued gently. "The whole internet made a mistake. But you’re here now. And Ashley needs to know that people can make things right when they mess up."
Mrs. Gable broke down, sitting in the chair and taking Andrew’s calloused hand in hers. "Thank you, Andrew... God bless you."

That evening, Mrs. Gable posted a new video online—a sincere, tearful apology taking full responsibility for her rush to judgment, urging everyone to support Andrew’s recovery fund.
The public response was overwhelming. Donations flooded in, topping $350,000, ensuring that Andrew’s medical debts, mortgage, and Ashley’s college fund were fully secured for the future.
