Chapter 4 - The Press Conference

At 3:00 PM, the lobby of the police headquarters was packed with dozens of reporters, camera crews, and local news anchors. Microphones from every major network lined the podium.

Officer Natalie stood beside DA Hayes and Chief Roberts. Out in the audience, several neighbors from Ashley’s street, including Mrs. Gable—the woman who had recorded the viral video—were standing near the back, expecting to hear formal charges announced against Andrew.

DA Hayes stepped up to the podium, his expression stern and unyielding.

"Good afternoon," Hayes began, his voice echoing through the crowded room and broadcasting live to hundreds of thousands of viewers across the state. "Over the past twenty-four hours, a video has circulated on social media regarding seven-year-old Ashley Miller and her father, Andrew Miller."

Camera shutters clicked rapidly.

"The public narrative surrounding this case has been filled with hasty judgments, condemnation, and vicious accusations of abandonment," Hayes continued, his gaze locking onto Mrs. Gable in the back row. "Today, I am here to deliver the actual facts of what took place."

Hayes projected large images onto the wall behind him—photos of the crushed blue pickup truck wedged in Blackwood Creek, the time-stamped pharmacy receipt for Ashley’s medicine, and the medical scans of Andrew’s shattered leg.

Gasps echoed through the room.

"On Thursday night at 7:42 PM, Andrew Miller purchased life-saving antibiotic medication and electrolyte drinks for his feverish daughter," Hayes announced, his voice booming with emotion. "On his way home, a washed-out road sent his vehicle fifty feet into a raging creek bed."

The room went dead silent. Reporters lowered their pens.

"For four days," Hayes said, his voice quivering slightly, "with a shattered femur, three broken ribs, and severe internal injuries, Andrew Miller crawled through mud, rocks, and icy water in an effort to get back to his little girl. He did not abandon his daughter. He nearly died trying to reach her."

In the back row, Mrs. Gable covered her mouth with both hands, her face turning pale as tears welled in her eyes. The neighbors who had cheered the accusations against Andrew stood in stunned, horrified silence.

"Andrew Miller is not a monster," Hayes declared, looking directly into the main news camera. "He is a testament to the absolute, boundless love of a father. Effective immediately, all inquiries into child neglect are dropped, and the state of Ohio honors Andrew Miller as a hero."

Within minutes, the viral tide swept in the opposite direction.
