Chapter 8 - The Price of Protection

The following morning, the front gates of the Hayes estate were swarmed not by reporters, but by federal marshals delivering a court summons.

I was in the kitchen helping Ava tie her shoelaces when Mrs. Gable hurried in, her face pale, holding a thick manila envelope bearing the stamp of the United States District Court for the District of Arizona.

“Mrs. Hayes,” Mrs. Gable said, her voice trembling slightly. “There are federal officers at the front gate. They’ve filed an emergency motion for a federal audit of your marriage certificate, initiated by a third-party petitioner: Sterling Global Holdings.”

Ava looked up at me with big, worried eyes. “Mommy, are we in trouble again?”

I forced a bright, reassuring smile, kneeling down to kiss her cheek. “Of course not, sweetheart. Mommy just has some adult paperwork to sort out. Go finish packing your backpack with Ethan, okay?”

Once the children were safely upstairs with their tutor, I walked into Daniel’s study.

Daniel was already on the phone with our chief corporate attorney, his voice sharp and commanding. He slammed the receiver down as I entered the room, running a hand through his dark hair.

“They’re trying to force an emergency deposition,” Daniel said, his jaw tight. “They want you on the stand, Sarah, under oath, picking apart every detail of how we met on that highway. They want to paint you as a hired actress and me as a corporate fraudster.”

“Then we give them a deposition,” I said steadily, walking over to stand right beside him.

Daniel looked up in surprise. “Sarah, you don't understand how vicious these federal depositions can get. They’ll dig into your past, your financial struggles, your previous marriage—everything you’ve tried to leave behind.”

“Let them dig,” I replied, my voice ringing with absolute conviction. “I have nothing to hide. Every word of my past is real, Daniel. I struggled, I fought, and I survived. And when I met you on that highway, I didn't care about your money or your company—I cared about my children having a future. If Viktor Sterling wants to put me on a witness stand, I’ll look him in the eye and tell the entire world why I chose to become your wife.”

Daniel stared at me for a long, silent moment. Then, slowly, a profound look of awe and deep affection washed over his rugged features. He pulled me into his arms, burying his face in my hair.

“You are the strongest person I have ever known, Sarah,” he whispered fiercely.

By Friday afternoon, the legal battle lines were drawn. Instead of cowering behind our lawyers, Daniel and I decided to take the fight directly to Viktor Sterling’s doorstep by filing a massive counter-suit for malicious prosecution, defamation, and corporate harassment.

We were preparing for the ultimate legal showdown—unaware that Viktor Sterling had a far more dangerous, personal card up his sleeve that he was about to play.
