Chapter 7 - Shadows on the Mountaintop

The victory in the boardroom felt absolute, but peace in the high-stakes world of corporate titans is rarely permanent.
Three weeks after Richard Hayes was stripped of his executive titles and Marcus took his plea deal, the Hayes estate had settled into a rhythm that felt remarkably like a real home. Ethan and Ava were enrolled in a prestigious private academy in Tucson, laughing in the backseat of the private security sedan every morning, their backpacks stuffed with new books and art supplies.
For the first time in her life, Ava wasn't clutching an empty plastic lunch container.
Yet, beneath the glittering surface of our new life, a cold current was beginning to stir.
It was a Tuesday evening when the security alarm system in the estate's subterranean server room triggered a silent alert. Daniel was in his private study reviewing quarterly financial reports when his secure tablet flashed red.
I walked in carrying a tray with two cups of herbal tea, pausing by his desk as I saw the hard, uncompromising line of his jaw.
“What is it?” I asked quietly, setting the cup down.
Daniel tapped the screen, bringing up a live feed from an external perimeter camera.
“Someone is probing our firewall,” Daniel said, his voice dangerously low. “And it’s not a random hacker. The encryption key used in this ping matches proprietary architecture belonging to Sterling Global Defense—a private intelligence firm based out of Zurich.”
My heart skipped a beat. The name sent a chill down my spine. “Sterling Global? Is that connected to Arthur Sterling?”
“No,” Daniel replied, standing up and pacing toward the floor-to-ceiling glass window overlooking the darkened desert valley. “Arthur Sterling was a small-time corporate raider compared to this. Sterling Global is owned by Viktor Sterling—Arthur’s older, far more dangerous brother. And he doesn't care about land development or board seats. He cares about leverage.”
“Leverage over what?” I stepped closer, my instincts as a protective mother instantly flaring.
Daniel turned around, his grey eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made the air in the room feel heavy.
“Over us. Over this marriage. Viktor knows that our civil ceremony was fast-tracked under an emergency corporate clause. He’s trying to dig up dirt on your past, Sarah—on your family, on your previous life before you met me—to file a federal injunction claiming our marriage is a fraudulent sham designed solely to manipulate securities laws.”
A cold knot formed in my stomach. My past—the quiet, painful years of running from bill collectors, hiding from an abusive ex-husband who had vanished years ago, and struggling just to keep food on the table—was supposed to be buried. If a man like Viktor Sterling got his hands on my old credit history or my court filings, he could twist them into a weapon to destroy everything we had built.
“I won't let him touch you or the kids,” Daniel said firmly, taking my hands in his. His grip was warm, solid, and absolute. “Viktor thinks he’s playing chess, but he doesn't realize we hold every piece on the board.”

Little did we know, halfway across the world in a high-rise office in Zurich, Viktor Sterling was reviewing a newly compiled dossier on my past, a cold smile spreading across his face as he dialed a secure satellite phone.
“The game has only just begun,” Viktor whispered into the receiver.
