Chapter 9 - The Final Gambit

The federal courthouse in downtown Tucson was a limestone fortress of neoclassical columns and heavy oak doors.

On a bright Monday morning, the media circus outside rivaled the day of the board meeting. Camera crews and flashing reporters lined the stone steps as Daniel and I stepped out of the black sedan, walking side by side with our heads held high. I wore a sharp, tailored navy pantsuit; Daniel wore his signature charcoal suit. We were a unified front.

Inside the courtroom, the atmosphere was thick with tension.

Judge Harrison, a stern, silver-haired magistrate with decades on the federal bench, sat behind the mahogany dais, reviewing the massive stack of motions filed by both sides.

Viktor Sterling’s lead attorney, a slick, expensive corporate shark named Julian Vance (no relation to our ally Marcus), stood at the podium with a smug, self-satisfied grin.

“Your Honor,” Vance began, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. “The petitioner, Sterling Global, has uncovered undeniable evidence that the marriage between Daniel Hayes and Sarah Mitchell was a hastily constructed, opportunistic arrangement designed explicitly to bypass corporate governance rules. We request an immediate injunction to dissolve the union and freeze all shared assets.”

Judge Harrison frowned, peering over his spectacles at Daniel. “Mr. Hayes, what do you have to say in response to these serious allegations?”

Before Daniel could stand up to speak, the heavy oak doors at the back of the courtroom swung open with a sharp click.

A tall man in a dark trench coat walked down the center aisle. He had sharp, angular features, icy blue eyes, and a cold, predatory smile that matched Viktor Sterling’s dossier photographs precisely.

Viktor Sterling himself had flown in from Zurich.

“Allow me to answer that, Your Honor,” Viktor’s smooth, accented voice echoed across the quiet courtroom as he stepped up beside his attorney. “Mr. Hayes didn't just marry a stranger for convenience. He married a woman whose past is riddled with financial liabilities and abandoned obligations. More importantly... we have reason to believe she is still legally bound to her first husband, making this entire marriage null and void.”

A collective gasp echoed through the gallery.

My heart hammered against my ribs. My first husband—a man who had abandoned our family five years ago, leaving us with mounting debts before disappearing across state lines—was legally unaccounted for. Had he never signed the final divorce papers? Had Viktor managed to track him down?

Daniel stood up instantly, his face dark with fury. “Your Honor, this is a baseless, desperate fishing expedition designed to harass my family!”

“Is it, Daniel?” Viktor taunted softly, pulling a certified document from his leather briefcase and handing it up to the bailiff. “Presenting Exhibit A: a previously unrecorded affidavit from Sarah’s estranged first husband, claiming he never received formal divorce notification.”

Judge Harrison took the paper from the bailiff, his expression turning grave as he scanned the text.

The courtroom went dead silent. Everything we had built—our home, our safety, our marriage, our family—hung by a single, fragile thread.

I looked at Daniel. His jaw was clenched, his grey eyes burning with an unspoken promise. He reached across the defense table and took my hand, squeezing my fingers with absolute, unyielding strength.

I took a deep breath, stood up from my chair, and looked directly up at the judge.

“Your Honor,” I said, my voice clear, steady, and echoing with absolute authority across the silent room. “May I address the court?”

Judge Harrison looked down at me, nodding slowly. “Proceed, Mrs. Hayes.”

I didn't flinch. I didn't tremble. I looked straight at Viktor Sterling, and then at the judge, ready to deliver the final blow that would shatter their conspiracy once and for all.
