Chapter 10 - The Strongest Fortress

“Your Honor,” I began, my voice carrying effortlessly through the quiet courtroom, “Mr. Sterling would like this court to believe that my past is a liability, and that my marriage to Daniel was built on paper and convenience.”

I reached into my own leather portfolio, pulling out a thick, official federal document bearing the holographic seal of the United States Department of Justice and the State Family Court archives.

“What Mr. Sterling failed to check—or deliberately chose to ignore in his rushed corporate dossier—is that my divorce from my first husband was finalized by a federal family court judge five years ago, complete with a signed abandonment waiver and a protective restraining order due to domestic desertion and financial fraud.”

I handed the document up to the bailiff, who carried it immediately to Judge Harrison.

“Furthermore,” I continued, turning my gaze directly toward Viktor Sterling, whose smug, self-satisfied smile instantly flickered and died, “even if that divorce had never taken place, Mr. Sterling’s entire petition rests on the premise that our marriage was solely a corporate maneuver. But under federal law, the validity of a marriage is determined by mutual commitment, shared household, and genuine family integration.”

I looked over at the gallery, where Mrs. Gable sat alongside Ethan and Ava—who had been brought to the courthouse by our security team just in case—holding up handmade drawings and smiling brightly at us.

“Mr. Sterling did not investigate a marriage of convenience,” I said, my voice ringing with absolute, unshakeable power. “He investigated a family. And no amount of corporate espionage or fabricated affidavits can undo the love and loyalty that binds us together.”

Judge Harrison carefully reviewed the federal court documents for two agonizing minutes. The courtroom was so quiet you could hear the hum of the overhead lights.

Finally, the judge closed the folder, looked up, and fixed a stern, icy glare upon Viktor Sterling and his legal team.

“Mr. Sterling,” Judge Harrison’s voice boomed across the room, dripping with judicial contempt. “Your petition is not only legally meritless; it borders on malicious abuse of the federal court system. I am dismissing this motion with prejudice, and ordering Sterling Global to pay all legal fees incurred by the defense.”

A collective wave of relief crashed over the courtroom.

Viktor Sterling’s face turned the color of ash. He turned on his heel without uttering a single word, grabbed his briefcase, and stormed out of the courtroom flanked by his humiliated attorneys.

As the heavy oak doors slammed shut behind him, Judge Harrison banged his gavel.

“Court is adjourned.”

Ten minutes later, Daniel and I walked out the front doors of the federal courthouse onto the sunlit stone steps.

The media circus erupted into a wall of flashing camera strobes and shouting reporters, but the noise felt distant, like white noise in the background.

Daniel wrapped his strong arm around my waist, pulling me tight against his chest as we descended the steps toward where Ethan and Ava were waiting for us by the black sedan, jumping up and down with excitement.

“You were magnificent,” Daniel whispered, his lips brushing my forehead as we reached the car. “You destroyed them.”

“We destroyed them,” I corrected softly, looking up into his warm, adoring grey eyes.

We climbed into the luxury sedan together, the heavy doors sealing out the noise of the outside world. As the vehicle glided smoothly away from the courthouse and began the long, scenic drive back up the winding mountain road toward our mountaintop estate, I looked back at my children laughing in the rearview mirror.

The Arizona sun was setting, painting the desert sky in breathtaking strokes of gold, crimson, and violet.

The highway where we had stood with forty-seven cents and broken suitcases felt like a lifetime ago. I didn't just find a job that day; I didn't just find a marriage of convenience.

I had found a fortress. And inside it, a love so deep and unbreakable that no storm on earth could ever tear it down.
