Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

Julian’s breath came in ragged, terrified gasps. He pressed his back against the cold corrugated wall of the upper catwalk, looking down at the broken bodies of his enforcement crew scattered across the warehouse floor.
“You took everything from me!” Julian screamed, his voice cracking with hysteria. “The company, the money, the respect! Dad always favored you! You were always the golden son!”
“You destroyed yourself, Julian,” Vance said coldly, taking a slow, measured step up the iron staircase. “You chose to steal, you chose to extortionate, and you put a child in danger to cover your tracks.”
“Don't come any closer!” Julian raised his pistol with both hands, aiming directly at Vance’s chest. “I swear to God, Vance, I’ll shoot!”
Vance didn't stop. He continued climbing the stairs, his dark eyes locked on his brother’s trembling face. “You don't have the stomach for it, Julian. You never did. You hire thugs like Marcus to do your violence because you’re a coward.”
“Shut up!” Julian shrieked, pressing the trigger.
Click.
The hammer fell on an empty chamber. In his panic, Julian had forgotten to rack the slide after clearing a jam minutes earlier.
Before Julian could react, Vance reached the top of the platform. He grabbed the handgun from Julian’s hand, stripped the magazine, and tossed the empty weapon over the railing. It hit the concrete floor below with a heavy clatter.
Vance grabbed Julian by the collar of his expensive Italian suit, pinning him against the steel railing of the catwalk. Julian whimpered, his hands clutching desperately at Vance’s wrists.
“Please, Vance… we’re brothers! Blood!” Julian begged, tears streaming down his face, mixing with sweat and grime. “Don't hand me over to the feds! They’ll put me away forever!”
Vance looked into his half-brother’s eyes, seeing no remorse, only the pathetic fear of a man who had finally been forced to face the consequences of his actions.
“You stopped being my brother the moment you let Marcus lift a belt against a six-year-old girl,” Vance said, his voice dropped to a cold, razor-sharp whisper.
Vance dragged Julian down the stairs, tossing him onto the concrete floor beside the trapped Marcus. Outside, the wail of approaching police sirens cut through the storm, accompanied by the flashing blue and red lights of dozens of law enforcement vehicles sealing off the harbor perimeter.
Ray stepped through the main entrance of the warehouse, followed by a squad of federal agents carrying tactical shields.
“Federal officers! Nobody move!” the lead agent shouted.
Vance stepped back, straightening his coat as the agents moved in, cuffing Julian and Marcus, reading them their rights as they dragged them away into the night.
Ray walked up to Vance, handing him a secure tablet showing the estate’s security feed. “The power grid has been restored, sir. The compound is completely secure, and Eleanor and Lily are waiting.”

Vance took a deep breath, feeling the heavy burden of the past three years finally lift from his shoulders.
“Let's go home,” Vance said.
