Chapter 7 - The Trap at the Docks

Night fell hard over the city harbor. Fog rolled thick off the black water, wrapping around rows of stacked shipping containers and towering industrial cranes.
Inside an abandoned warehouse at Pier 42, Julian Carter paced back and forth across the concrete floor. Around him stood eight surviving members of the Black Vipers, led by a heavily bandaged Marcus, whose face was swollen and bruised from his encounter with Vance the previous night.
“You promised us a million dollars in offshore bonds, Julian!” Marcus snarled, his voice thick through his broken jaw. “My club is burnt, the feds raided our spot, and Vance took the kid!”
“Shut up, Marcus!” Julian yelled, his hair disheveled, his suit rumpled and stained. “The money is in the vault at the docks! But we can't move it while Vance’s security teams are watching the airport and the highways!”
Julian pulled a heavy satellite phone from his pocket. “Vance thinks he’s won because he has Eleanor and the kid. But he doesn't know I set up a secondary override on the Carter Global logistics network. I’ve initiated a remote lockdown on his estate’s power grid.”
Marcus grinned viciously through his bandages. “So the compound goes dark?”
“In ten minutes, the perimeter fences go offline, the cameras shut down, and the back entrance unlocks,” Julian said with a chilling smile. “Vance will be forced to leave his secure bunker to fix the breach himself. And when he comes down to the harbor to trace the override signal… we finish him.”
Unbeknownst to Julian, high above the warehouse on a dark industrial crane, a directional microphone was picking up every word.
In the back of his mobile command vehicle parked two blocks away, Vance listened to the intercepted audio feed. Beside him, Ray was rapidly analyzing the terminal access logs on his laptop screen.
“He’s telling the truth about the override code, sir,” Ray reported. “Julian used his old executive key to trigger a fail-safe routine at the main harbor node. If we don't clear the node, the estate will lose backup power in less than an hour.”
“He thinks he’s drawing me into an ambush,” Vance said, his eyes reflecting the dark amber light of the monitors.
“It is an ambush, sir,” Ray warned. “They have high-ground advantage inside that warehouse and at least a dozen armed men.”
Vance stood up, pulling on a reinforced tactical vest over his dark shirt. “Julian built his entire trap around the assumption that I would act defensively to protect the estate. He expects me to send a repair crew.”

Vance picked up his sidearm, checking the sight alignment.
“Instead, we take the offensive and tear the trap apart from the inside.”
