Chapter 2 - Echoes of the Past

The heavy reinforced doors of the armored SUV closed with a muted thud, shutting out the night and the distant, fading wails of sirens. Inside, the cabin was wrapped in soft, ambient lighting and the quiet hum of a high-performance engine. Vance sat in the wide rear seat, keeping Lily wrapped in a warm wool blanket. She had fallen into a restless sleep, her thumb tucked into her mouth, tiny shoulders hitching occasionally from lingering sobs.

Vance smoothed a lock of hair from her forehead. His mind raced back through the years, piecing together how a child of his blood had ended up in the den of the Black Vipers.

Seven years ago, Vance had walked away from the city’s underground power struggles to build Carter Global, an international security and logistics empire built on absolute discretion and unbreakable rules. But his former life had left deep scars and bitter enemies. Among them was his half-brother, Julian—a man who drifted into the violent, opportunistic underworld of outlaw motorcycle clubs.

When Vance’s former partner, Eleanor, vanished three years ago, she left no trace. Vance had deployed every resource across two continents to locate her, unaware that she had been trapped in a web of debt and extortion spun by Julian and his front man, Marcus. They had kept Eleanor’s daughter, Lily, as leverage to ensure silence and obedience.

Julian had miscalculated. He had believed Vance was too focused on corporate boardrooms to notice the subtle movements in the city's lower depths. He hadn't realized that Vance never stopped watching.

The SUV glided through the wrought-iron gates of the Carter Estate, a private compound situated high on the cliffs overlooking the bay. As the vehicle halted in the subterranean garage, Vance’s head of security, Ray, opened the door. Ray was a veteran with graying temples and a steady gaze.

“The medical team is waiting upstairs, sir,” Ray said softly. “And we’ve secured the perimeter. The Vipers won't even know where to look.”

“They won't look yet,” Vance replied, stepping out while cradling Lily in his arms. “Marcus is a coward. He’ll go to Julian first to beg for protection and lie about what happened tonight.”

Vance carried Lily up the private elevator directly to the west wing, placing her on a soft bed in a room bathed in warm lighting. A pediatrician examined her carefully, confirming that while she was bruised and severely undernourished, she had sustained no permanent physical injuries.

As the doctor prepared mild treatments, Vance stood by the French doors leading to the balcony. Night stretched over the ocean, black and vast. He knew this rescue was only the opening move in a grander, far more dangerous game. Taking Lily back meant tearing down the entire network Julian had spent years constructing.

A quiet knock sounded at the door. Ray stepped inside, holding a encrypted tablet.

“Sir, Julian just activated three separate burner cells in the district,” Ray reported, keeping his voice low. “He’s calling in debts from the Syndicate. They know the child is gone, and they know only a professional team could have pulled that entry off.”

Vance turned back to look at the sleeping girl. Her small fingers clutched the edge of the plush blanket.

“Let them search,” Vance said cold-bloodedly. “Tomorrow, we cut off their money.”
