Chapter 5 - The Mountain Sanctuary

Rain began to fall as the convoy of three black armored sedans climbed the winding roads of the Pine Ridge Mountains. High above the valley, surrounded by dense pine forests and steep cliffs, stood the Crestview Clinic—a secluded stone-and-glass complex isolated from the rest of the world.
Inside the lead vehicle, Vance checked his sidearm, pulling the slide back to chamber a round before holstering it beneath his dark coat. Beside him, Ray reviewed the facility's blueprints on a tactical display.
“There are eight armed guards on the perimeter,” Ray explained, pointing to red blips on the screen. “Four more inside the main medical wing. They’re using heavy military-grade gear. Julian spent a fortune setting this up.”
“They aren't expecting a direct assault,” Vance said, his voice flat and focused. “They think we’re still looking for them in the city. We strike hard, secure Eleanor, and clear out before local authorities can respond to the security alarms.”
The convoy pulled off the main road onto an unpaved trail, stopping just short of the clinic’s outer fence line. Vance and his six security operatives dismounted silently, moving through the rain-soaked forest like ghosts.
At the perimeter gate, two guard dogs began to bark, but before their handlers could react, Vance’s team deployed non-lethal acoustic disruptors. The handlers dropped their weapons, disoriented, as Ray’s men swept in, securing the gate in seconds.
Vance breached the side entrance of the main building, stepping into a sterile, white-tiled hallway that smelled of antiseptic and ozone. An alarm klaxon began to blare, bathing the corridor in flashing red emergency lights.
Two armed contractors stepped into the hallway with raised rifles. Vance moved instantly, closing the distance before the first guard could bring his weapon to bear. He struck the guard’s wrist, deflecting the barrel upward, and executed a swift knee strike to the man’s abdomen, knocking him to the floor. The second guard fired a wild burst into the ceiling, but Ray tackled him from behind, pinning him to the tile.
“Clear!” Ray shouted.
Vance sprinted down the corridor toward Room 104, the private suite designated on the blueprint. He kicked the heavy electronic lock, forcing the door open with a metallic wrenching sound.
Inside, sitting in a wheelchair near the window, was Eleanor. She looked thin and pale, her eyes wide with shock as the door burst open. Standing behind her was a man in a black tactical vest, holding a suppressed pistol aimed directly at the door.

“Step back!” the guard screamed over the noise of the alarm. “Step back or I end this right now!”
Vance halted instantly, raising his hands slowly. His mind calculated the distance, the angle, and the timing down to the millisecond.
