Chapter 9 - The True Vows

The reception was a blur of genuine warmth. People who had once kept their distance out of fear of Victoria’s sharp tongue came forward to apologize and congratulate us.
"Your grandmother was a giant among us, Clara," an elderly senator told me, pressing a warm hand over mine. "Seeing you honor her memory today... she would have been so proud of your courage."
Daniel remained glued to my side throughout the evening. Every time our eyes met, a shared understanding passed between us. We had won. The company was secure, the fraudulent debts were exposed, and Victoria and Lila were currently sitting in separate interrogation rooms at the downtown police station.
At midnight, the party finally began to wind down. The last of the guests boarded their limousines, leaving behind a hall filled with wilting roses and empty champagne flutes.
Daniel and I retreated to the bridal suite on the top floor of the luxury hotel.
As the elevator doors closed, I leaned my head against Daniel’s chest, letting out a long, exhausted sigh. "Did that really just happen?"
"Every single second of it," Daniel said, kissing the crown of my head. "You took your life back today, Clara."
"We took it back," I whispered.
When we stepped into the suite, the quiet was intoxicating. Daniel unbuttoned his tuxedo collar, pouring two glasses of sparkling water, while I sat down in front of the ornate vanity mirror, carefully taking off grandmother’s diamond earrings.
"Arthur texted me while we were saying goodbye to the guests," Daniel said, setting a glass beside me. "The judge signed the emergency asset freeze. Victoria's personal accounts are locked. She won't even be able to post bail until Monday morning."
I looked at my reflection in the mirror. For the first time in years, the hollow fear in my eyes was gone, replaced by a steady, quiet strength.
"And Lila?" I asked.
"Lila is currently singing like a canary to the district attorney," Daniel chuckled grimly. "She's handing over text logs, forged invoices, bank transfers—anything she thinks might save her own skin."
I shook my head, feeling a mixture of pity and relief. "They really thought fear would keep me quiet forever."

"They underestimated you," Daniel said, coming behind me and gently resting his hands on my shoulders. "They forgot whose blood runs in your veins."
He leaned down and kissed my neck, his hands tracing down my arms. For a moment, the world shrank down to just the two of us, wrapped in the warmth of our hard-fought victory.
