Chapter 3 - The Shadow Heir

The hand belonged to Arthur Sterling, the most feared probate attorney in the state. He had been seated quietly in the fourth row, blending in with Daniel's extended family. Now, he stood between Lila and me, his grip unyielding.
"I suggest you step back, Miss Vance," Arthur said coldly, dropping Lila’s wrist as if it were contaminated. "Every word Clara has spoken is supported by certified legal affidavits currently being filed with the district court."
Lila stumbled backward, clutching her wrist, looking at Victoria for help. But Victoria was paralyzed. The entire ballroom had turned into an arena, and she was the one trapped in the center.
"Arthur..." Victoria stammered, attempting to summon her trademark charm, though her voice wobbled terribly. "You—you were Evelyn’s attorney. You retired seven years ago. What is this ridiculous circus?"
"I came out of retirement for one final case, Victoria," Arthur replied smoothly, turning toward the stunned audience. "Ten years ago, Mrs. Evelyn Vance discovered that her daughter had forged medical power-of-attorney documents to isolate her in her final months. Knowing Victoria's ruthless greed, Evelyn created an ironclad blind trust. She knew Victoria would hide the truth until Clara's wedding day. So she left me with explicit instructions: protect Clara until she was ready to claim what was hers."
Whispers turned into an uproar. Guests were pulling out their smartphones, filming the entire scene. Victoria’s closest social circle—women who had spent the last five years sneering at me behind champagne flutes—were already discreetly backing away toward the ballroom exits, desperate to distance themselves from the impending scandal.
"Daniel," Victoria pleaded, turning to my fiancé with desperate, wide eyes. "Daniel, please. Think of your family's reputation! The Montgomery name! You can't let your wedding become an internet spectacle. Tell her to stop this nonsense!"
Daniel looked at his future mother-in-law with an expression of sheer contempt. "My family's reputation is built on honor, Victoria. Yours was built on fraud. And for the record, I was the one who hired Arthur Sterling three months ago."
Victoria’s jaw dropped. The air seemed to leave her lungs in a hollow rattle.
"You?" she whispered.
"Clara told me how you treated her," Daniel said, stepping beside me and sliding his warm hand into mine. "She thought she was just an unwanted burden. But I knew your family’s financial records didn’t add up. When I saw the way you forced Lila into every business deal while treating Clara like an unpaid servant, I started digging. And everything we found led back to this day."
"You set me up," Victoria snarled, the sweet, polished facade peeling away completely, revealing the monster underneath. "Both of you. You planned this!"
"You planned the sabotage, Mother," I countered softly. "You bribed the seamstress to destroy my wedding gown. You had Lila swap it with a dress two sizes too small, dyed a putrid yellow, meant to make me look like an unhinged fool walking down the aisle. You wanted the Montgomerys to look at me with pity and disgust."
May you like
I stepped off the raised platform, walking down the white aisle toward her. With every step, Victoria took a half-step back, her designer heels catching slightly on the runner.
"You thought you were breaking me," I whispered into the mic. "Instead, you just gave me the stage."
