Chapter 7 - Poison in the Well

The minister swallowed hard, cleared his throat, and adjusted his glasses. "Yes, of course. Where were we?"

Laughter rippled through the congregation, easing the last remnants of tension. Guests settled back into their seats, their faces glowing with excitement. This was no longer just another stiff, society wedding; it had become the most historic event the city had seen in decades.

Daniel took my hands, facing me squarely under the flower arch.

"Wait," I said softly, looking around the room. "The music."

From the balcony, the string quartet—who had been watching the drama with wide eyes—quickly picked up their bows. With a gentle nod from the conductor, they began playing a soaring, triumphant arrangement of Canon in D.

The minister opened his book. "Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today..."

As the familiar words echoed through the hall, I felt Daniel's fingers tighten reassuringly over mine. He looked down at me with so much devotion that the memory of Victoria's venomous threats completely dissolved.

We had anticipated almost everything. We had prepared for Victoria to make a scene; we had prepared for Lila’s tantrums; we had armed ourselves with legal injunctions, police escorts, and forensic evidence.

Yet, as the minister reached the exchange of vows, my eyes drifted momentarily toward the heavy brass doors at the back of the ballroom.

Standing in the shadow of the exit corridor, barely visible through the frosted glass panel, stood a tall figure in a dark trench coat. He wasn't watching the ceremony with joy, nor with the shock of a curious guest. He was holding a burner phone to his ear, his posture stiff, his eyes fixed dead on me.

When he saw me notice him, he didn't run. He slowly lowered the phone, gave a faint, chilling tilt of his head, and vanished into the outer hallway.

A sudden chill prickled the nape of my neck.

"Clara?" Daniel’s voice pulled me back. He was gazing at me with tender concern. "Are you ready?"

I forced my attention back to the man I loved, burying the sudden flicker of unease. "Yes. I'm ready."
