Chapter 10 - The Lioness's Fury

The maintenance sublevel smelled of ozone and hot copper. Emergency red siren lights bathed the concrete walls in a bloody hue. Gunfire echoed from the end of the corridor—the sharp cracks of suppressed automatic rifles.

Damian moved like a shadow of death. With terrifying speed and inhuman precision, he turned the corner and fired. Two men in black tactical gear dropped instantly, their weapons clattering against the concrete.

We sprinted toward the vault door.

In front of the steel hatch stood Dr. Julian Vance. The once-dignified physician was wild-eyed, his designer suit torn and splattered with grime. In his trembling hands, he held a pressurized canister hooked directly to the vault's air filtration intake, his thumb resting over a mechanical release valve.

"Step back, Damian!" Julian screamed hysterically, spittle flying from his lips. "One press and the halothane mixture floods the chamber! The little brat goes to sleep permanently, and Nikolai pays me fifty million to disappear!"

Damian raised his gun, his aim steady on Julian’s forehead. "You pull that valve, Julian, and I will skin you alive before you bleed out."

"She’s already dead in my mind!" Julian shrieked. "She should have died two years ago with her filthy mother!"

He pressed his thumb down.

A sound—primal, unhinged, and deafening—erupted from my throat.

I didn't think. I didn't calculate. I lunged forward before Damian could fire, grabbing a heavy steel fire extinguisher mounted on the wall. With the adrenaline of a mother defending her child, I hurled myself at Julian, swinging the heavy cylinder with all my strength.

The metal slammed squarely into Julian’s ribs with a sickening crunch. He gasped, dropping the canister.

Before he could recover, Damian closed the distance. A single, thunderous shot echoed down the corridor, and Julian Vance collapsed to the floor, dead before his body hit the concrete.

Damian immediately kicked the toxin canister away, sealing the intake port with an emergency override switch. He entered the biometric code on the heavy vault door.

The heavy steel hiss released.

Inside, sitting in the center of the reinforced bunker holding her worn stuffed rabbit, was Leah. She blinked at the sudden light, her eyes wide.

When she saw me covered in sweat, my emerald gown torn at the hem, she dropped the rabbit, jumped to her feet, and ran toward me.

"Mama!" she cried out.

I collapsed onto my knees, catching her small body, burying my face in her soft curls, weeping tears of pure, unadulterated relief. Damian dropped down beside us, his massive arms wrapping around both of us, pulling us against his broad chest. His heart beat furiously against my cheek, steady and protective.

"It's over," Damian whispered into my hair. "It's finally over. You are safe. Both of you."
