Chapter 3 - Whispers in the Grand Hall

The grandeur of the Vance estate was suffocating. Marble pillars rose into vaulted ceilings painted with Renaissance frescoes, while crystal chandeliers cast dazzling prisms across polished oak floors. Yet despite the breathtaking luxury, the house felt devoid of warmth—like a museum where life was forbidden to make a sound.
Leah still refused to be carried by anyone else. Even when Damian attempted to gently lift her so I could wash my hands, her breath hitched into an immediate panic, tiny whimpers turning into frantic cries until my arms were around her again.
"She chose you," Damian observed quietly, his dark eyes shadowed with an unreadable emotion. "She doesn't even let my personal staff touch her hair."
A sharp clatter of designer heels echoed down the grand staircase, breaking the stillness.
"Damian! What on earth took you so long? The council has been waiting for two hours—"
The voice was high, polished, and razor-sharp. A woman stepped onto the landing, draped in an ivory silk cocktail dress, diamonds catching the light at her throat and wrists. Vanessa Vance. She was strikingly beautiful in the way venomous creatures often are, her smile frozen in practiced perfection until her gaze landed on me.
Her steps halted instantly. Her mascara-framed eyes widened, sweeping over my threadbare sneakers, my stained apron, and the little girl clinging to my chest.
"Who is that woman?" Vanessa demanded, her voice dropping an octave as her composure cracked. "And why is she holding Leah? Put the child down! What kind of filth did you bring into this house, Damian?"
She rushed down the final steps, her manicured hand lunging outward to rip Leah away from me.
Instinct took over before thought could. I spun on my heel, shielding Leah with my entire body, pressing the toddler’s head against my collarbone. Leah shrieked, burying her face and trembling violently.
"Don't touch her!" I snapped, the feral protective fury of a mother surging from the darkest depths of my soul. I didn't care that this woman wore diamonds worth more than my lifetime earnings, or that armed guards lined the hall. Nobody was touching this child against her will.
"How dare you raise your voice at me!" Vanessa shrieked, raising her hand to strike me.
A heavy hand clamped around Vanessa's wrist with the speed of a striking viper.
Damian towered over her, his grip tightening until her knuckles turned ghostly white. The warmth he had shown in the car was entirely gone, replaced by the terrifying aura of a ruthless mafia sovereign.
"You raise a hand under my roof again, Vanessa, and I will have it broken," Damian whispered coldly. "Step back."
"Damian, you're being absurd!" Vanessa cried, wincing from the pain. "She's a common waitress! Look at her! She probably slipped something into Leah's drink at that filthy diner to make her act this way!"
"Leah spoke," Damian said.
The entire hall fell dead silent. Vanessa froze, the color draining from her cheeks so completely that her blush stood out like two bruised stains.
"What?" Vanessa breathed.
"She spoke two words," Damian said, stepping between Vanessa and us. "She looked at this woman, and she called her Mama."

Vanessa’s lips parted, but no sound came out. For a split second, sheer panic flickered in her eyes—not shock, not confusion, but absolute, paralyzing guilt. And in that single second, I knew without a shred of doubt that Vanessa was hiding a monstrous secret.
