Chapter 6 - Unmasking the Vipers

The subterranean wine cellar beneath the estate had been cleared of luxury vintage bottles. In their place, heavy steel chairs were bolted to the cold stone floor. The chill down here was damp and smelled of ancient stone and impending violence.

Eleanor Vance sat bound to the chair, her silver hair perfectly coiffed, her chin held high in defiant aristocracy. Beside her, Vanessa sobbed hysterically, her designer makeup running in ugly black streaks down her cheeks.

Damian stood in the center of the room, playing with a heavy gold signet ring on his finger. I stood at the threshold, Leah resting safely upstairs in the nursery under the watchful eyes of Maria and three heavily armed bodyguards.

"Damian, this is barbaric!" Eleanor spat, glaring at her stepson. "You dare treat the matriarch of this family like a common criminal over the word of an alley cat?"

Damian didn't raise his voice. He simply tossed a thick manila folder onto Eleanor’s lap. The pages spilled out: wire transfers, hospital admission logs, forged death certificates, and the Zurich DNA analysis bearing my name.

"Dr. Julian Vance has just been picked up at the airport in Miami," Damian said coldly. "He gave up everything in exchange for a bullet through his head instead of being fed to the harbor fish. Would you like to hear his confession, Eleanor?"

Vanessa let out a shriek. "It was her idea! Damian, I swear to God, it was mother’s idea! She said if we raised the baby together, you would eventually marry me to give Leah a complete family! I didn't want to steal a child!"

"Shut your pathetic mouth, Vanessa!" Eleanor snapped, her aristocratic facade finally shattering into raw malice. She turned her venomous gaze toward me, her eyes burning with pure hatred. "Look at her! A nothing! A waitress who cleans up breadcrumbs for pennies! Do you think a girl like that deserves to hold the keys to a ten-billion-dollar empire? I gave that brat a royal upbringing! She would have grown up a Vance!"

I walked forward, each step firm on the stone floor. For two years, I had believed I was cursed. I had wept until my eyes were dry at a tiny gravestone in an overgrown cemetery, wondering what sin I had committed to lose my precious girl.

I stopped inches from Eleanor. Without flinching, I slapped her across the face with everything I had.

The crack echoed against the stone walls. Eleanor gasped, her face whipping to the side, a crimson welt forming instantly on her porcelain cheek.

"She cried for two years in your golden cage," I whispered, my voice shaking with righteous fury. "She lived in silence because she couldn't stand the sight of you. You gave her diamonds, but you starved her of the only thing a baby needs—love."

Damian looked at me, a rare flash of pride and dark admiration gleaming in his eyes.

"Marco," Damian commanded, not turning around. "Strip Eleanor and Vanessa of every trust, every credit line, every asset bearing the Vance name. Hand Eleanor over to the state prosecutor for child trafficking, medical fraud, and conspiracy to kidnap. Put Vanessa on a cargo ship to an isolated compound in South America. If either of them sets foot on American soil again, terminate them."

Eleanor screamed as the guards unbolted her chair, dragging her backward into the shadows. "You can't do this to me! I am a Vance! You will regret this, Damian! Julian wasn't working alone!"

The heavy steel door slammed shut, drowning out her curses.
